ok ok, so i sat down and spent 3 hours of my life watching this movie..... can ANYONE tell me what the hell it was about?? i watched it with 2 freinds and just whole movie we were asking each other "what was that about? whats happening?" i admit that we werent paying the closest attention to it, but i just could not follow. and it just ended when i thought it was about to become clearer
Heh, I think that's the point. It's like a puzzle. That was actually my favorite movie from 2001. I could offer a decent analysis, but I need to have the movie fresh in my mind. It's just too much to remember. Mulholland drive/twin peaks is THE BIGGEST EMPORER'S WITH NO CLOTHES ON reference i've ever seen. The David Lynch crew knows this, also. These are movies for the moron critics to go "yes, but..." These movies were never MEANT to make any sense. I still loathe anyone who tried to talk to me about "Twin Peaks". These movies, and David Lynch, were the worst thing that ever happened to semi-intelligent people. David Lynch fan's: Please go on a random crappy talk show! You know that is where you belong!.... Seriously.
No ****! Especially <i>The Straight Story</i>. What a pretentious piece of crap that was. What's wrong with a movie not making sense? Everybody can have their own interpretation. Does a movie have to be filled with a linear storyline with no stone left unturned for it to be considered <i>good</i>? So many details are stuffed into his movies it hard to <i>not</i> believe there's some method to his madness (eventhough in most cases, I agree, there isn't). Yeah, I hate pretentious movie critics too, but don't lump all fans of David Lynch in one category. You know, you can not like a movie without lambasting <i>everyone</i> else who does like it...that almost sounds like something an arrogant-prick, movie critic would do.
First off, Naomi Watts is very cute...and naked so that alone is almost worth it. IMO, Watts was getting revenge on that other actress who took a niave girl trying to get into showbusiness as a lover and then screwed her around. When the dark-haired chick lost her memory, Watts used the opportunity for revenge. However, the old people and that weird time distortions are still puzzles to me.
I hated Mulholland Drive. "Pretentious" is the perfect adjective to describe this colosal waste of time.
You thought Mulholland Drive was hard to understand? You should see the new Matrix. What a complete mess of a story.
The problem with Mulholland Drive, imo, is that even if it was more linear it would still be a bad movie - nudity aside. Even the little bit of the story line that you could udnerstand, well, wasn't that exciting. Just my opinion though Memento wasn't linear but was still good.
IIRC, Mulholland Drive was originally created as a pilot for ABC. After ABC rejected it, Lynch filmed some more stuff and tacked that on the end (this explains the radically different hairstyle for Naomi Watts in the end scenes). That may lead to part of your confusion. (if not mine)
Rocketfish, I believe different people have different interpretations of the movie. To me, the movie consists of two parts, the first part is a scary dream and the second part explains where the dream came from. I am really a big fan of this movie so I watched it quite a few times, my feeling is like the more I watch it, the more those nonsense makes sense; every little detail in the dream (first part of the movie) has its explanations in the real life (2nd part). The story is pretty simple, IMO. A girl killed another girl who was more successful than herself and who was also her sex partner. The killer wished she had never committed the murder so she had that strange/scary dream where the other girl was not killed instead she lost her memory. (This is the part that I really like: what's the best way to forget all the silly things we have done in the past? We wish people lose their memories which can only be achieved in our dreams. ) Shrimpie
There is nothing to question about this movie after Naomi Watts gets with the other woman A coworker were discussing horrors and I started on. how much I liked The Ring then this came to mind. I had completely forgotten about Mullholand Driver's going nowhere weirdness till opening this thread
This thread is like a David Lynch twist. A thread that was buried suddenly resurfaces. I’m a fan of the movie and while I do very much enjoy the Naomi Watts exposure it is a very interesting work of art. I’m not going to try to explain it but it’s about questioning memory.
