Verlander might be done, but I wouldn't be surprised if he had a few more great starts in him either. Let him work it out, but when it really matters they need a contingency and a quick hook. He can't get shelled in the playoffs, but I still want him out there. He's freakin' Justin Verlander.
Get it, get ready to throw...how the hell do we know? 2-3 innings, make it happen, you're not a Starter, **** your ego
He's been saying he feels good and now suddenly "came back quick" makes me fear there's gonna be horrible decision or horrible mess. He might have ment 100% that "....rip that jersey off me" stuff. Love the guy but this is bs excuse and most prob.he's gonna fight for post season start using reasoning that there is more to come when he just gets healthy. I fkin hope the Astros have eye on winning and not manifacturing legacy for 1 player. Guy is already surely in HOF and sitting on mountain of money with model wife in his lap. He does't need the whole franchise to bend over for him. How do you speak to rest of the guys after exit in post season and JV exploding? Guys have fought tooth and nail to get to this position. Earlish exit v WS trip might make +50m difference in Breggy's bag and owners love post season stories. Same goes year away for Framber and Tucker. Post season even baserunner is rally and JV is giving multirun innings like is nothing against worst lineups. Time for that phantom IL and JV let the guys win you another World Series as parting gift.
He must be the better receiver, pitch caller then, because pitchers want him to catch them. We're not talking about a guy that's Maldy level bad.
Reminder, if the Astros win it all, Abreu and him do get a ring and designation on Baseball Reference as World Series champions
As long as Max Scherzer is not retired, Verlander won't retired. The strikeout total is very important to him.
Verlander pitched to the logical conclusion of his old walkout song, I'm not sure he'd have it any other way. 'Til the roof comes off, 'til the lights go out 'Til my legs give out, can't shut my mouth 'Til the smoke clears out, am I high? Perhaps I'ma rip this **** 'til my bones collapse
Verlander saying he may have returned too soon probably has nothing to do with health. It's about building up strength/endurance and tuning his command. And he's probably right. But he hasn't derailed the playoff chances and he has given all the starters more rest. No way he makes the WC roster but. . . Start him the final Mariner game (4 days rest) If he can manage 4+ innings of 2 runs or less then let him throw a heavy bullpen on 9/30 (4 days rest) then start game 1 of ALDS (4 days rest) w/ Blanco preparing to start the very next inning if JV gets into any trouble. That also puts Framber ready for game #5 on regular rest if needed.
If it was about strength, endurance, and command tuning, wouldn't he be gradually improving? Regardless, like you said, his return did at minimum allow the other starters extra rest with the 6-man rotation.
