Young seems like a great guy, but he has no special traits and in the NFL to even be a top 15 QB you have to have special traits. The Panthers spent big FA money on Lewis and Hunt at OG and Ekwonu/Moton appear decent OT's. Bozeman has started in the NFL. I dont think the OL is as bad as you think it is. Then they traded for Dionte Johnson, drafted Legette, and have Thielen, as well as drafting Sanders and Brooks. They did their best to protect Young and give him good weapons. For whatever reasons it's not working out. (Probably because he's a midget by NFL standards if I had to guess. But Hey at least he got paid.
Thank you... can we please stop acting like we knew he would suck because he was small. I know some of you were against him due to height, but other than that, reviews and analysts RAVED about every other aspect of his game. And even if you didn't think he would be worthy of that pick, I dont think anyone had him busting this hard, this fast. THAT BEING SAID.. I owe someone (I cannot remember who) an apology. They said "I have a 3rd round grade on Bryce" and I absolutely went after him. Turns out, that guy was wrong as well, but he was much closer than I was as well as the rest of the NFL.
Considering BY won't be a starter in this league moving forward and that most 3rd round QB's end up being backups to out of the league... His projection was spot on.
I mean, I'd take Mills over BY, that was what I was going off, but either way, he was right, I was wrong.
Agreed, nobody thought he would be this bad. I didn't like the fact that he has avg arm strength as well as being a midget by NFL standards.
I don't know... there are A LOT of amateur - and even some professional - draft analysts who were high on him. But I have a sneaking suspicion, once teams actually got him into their building and saw how small he was... I think a lot - if not the majority - of pro teams would've passed. He isn't just small - he's historically small, and small in a way that is immediately evident. I fully believe, given the draft capital they traded, that the Texans would've passed and taken Anderson if Stroud had gone 1.1.
Ben Solak did a pretty good job breaking down the Bryce Young situation after Week 1. And by all accounts it was even worse in week 2. What had to be most concerning for the Panthers is that they invested heavily in the O-Line during the offseason, their offensive line has actually been pretty good this season, and yet Young is seemingly even worse than last year. I'm sure Tepper had his hands all over this decision, but even if he didn't, Canales surely would lose the locker room if he kept Bryce starting much longer.
To be fair, 3 of those weapons are rookies with 1 not even on the depth chart currently. Not to mention he’s only played 2 games with them. But no doubt Bryce has looked awful and it certainly seems like the size concerns were legitimate. But really hard imagining Stroud or any other young QB succeeding in that situation. Very reminiscent of the Culley/Lovie days here.
I hate this narrative they’re trying to push. Bryce Young flatout sucks. The good qbs find a way to succeed, even in bad situations. Even bad qbs have a couple of good games every once in a while. Bryce Young has shown you nothing to get excited about. Andy Dalton started a game for the panthers last season and he threw for over 300 yards and two tds. If he was the our qb, they would be saying the Texans failed Bryce Young and possibly could’ve gotten Demeco fired.
Honestly, I think both are true. I don't think Bryce Young was ever going to be a successful starting QB in this league, but the Panthers absolutely did little to nothing to put him in a situation to realize whatever potential he does have. They each failed each other. Edit: So reminiscent of David Carr and the Texans. The front office in those days did a poor job protecting him and giving him time to throw, but Carr admittedly never put in the effort needed to be successful. Each side was responsible for the failure.
Carr never cared or gave crap about anyone other than himself, there was no situation he would have been successful. He was a failure no matter what situation he came into you, you can't play qb if you don't care. If that was Peyton or any other qb who didn't suck they would have been fine in houston.
I thought you couldn't judge players until they are 40 years old or something like that? Is that just basketball?
That bothered me. A few of us in the preseason threads were like what have they done to only play their qb for a series.
That's my theory as well. All the rumors around the draft kind of hint at this because before the Bears traded the pick we were locked in at QB...the moment the Panthers traded up, clearly for a QB, we started to hear a lot of other things. 1. That the Texans might trade up and 2. That the Texans might not draft a QB The latter really started to heat up right when the Panthers traded up and right before the draft which tells me Texans had one QB on their board that they were drafting at that spot and it was Stroud. Had Carolina taken him then they probably just take WAJ and go with Mills for another year. The trade up rumors when they were 2nd tells you that they had one QB they thought it was worth it, and it was Stroud, and looking at things now CJ would have been worth trading up 1 spot for.
