Haiti's notorious gang leader, Barbecue, says his forces are ready for a long fight

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — The gangs in Haiti can't be ignored. This weekend they took the streets in their neighborhoods in a show of force. NPR saw dozens of heavily armed men, some wearing balaclavas in the blazing Caribbean heat, with handguns, with assault rifles with machetes.

And Jimmy Chérizier, known as Babekyou in Haitian Creole — or Barbecue — is one of the most powerful and notorious gang leaders. He heads the G9 federation of gangs.

He is the man who convinced many of Haiti's gangs to stop fighting each other and start fighting the government. The alliance of rival gangs is known as Viv Ansanm, or "Living Together."

Over the past two months, they've attacked government installations, brought down a prime minister and nearly paralyzed the capital city. Haitians have largely been left to fend for themselves.

The U.S. Treasury put him on a sanctions list in 2020, and the United Nations sanctioned him in 2022. He stands accused of human rights abuses, including taking part in massacres, along with other charges.

Barbecue met with NPR in Delmas, the neighborhood he controls in the capital of Port-au-Prince, and talked for over an hour. He arrived in a brand-new Toyota Land Cruiser and had a boy on his knees cleaning his flip-flops.

Barbecue, 47, used to be a police officer. He worked for a squad called the Unité départementale de maintien d'ordre. He led operations against gangs and was responsible for quelling unrest. Members of the unit were accused of shooting protesters dead.

The only people who still believe that Haitian immigrants are eating people's pets in Springfield are MAGA supporters that are desparate because Trump is making it more more clear that he really is unhinged.

Supporters who didn't pay much attention but liked him because they saw "leftists" getting triggered by him and wanted to believe that anything mainstream media reported about him was personal attack rather than factual suddenly realized that they is demented, unhinged, and says crazy untrue things.

That's a difficult thing for people to swallow. So in an attempt to show the vast majority were wrong and only Trump dared to tell the truth, are twisting themselves in illogical ways to present the idea that maybe just maybe Springfield has mass numbers of pet eating immigrants there.

But each stretch or twist they try only exposes something ugly about themselves.

Meanwhile, EVERYONE ELSE... THE REST OF THE COUNTRY AND WORLD have accepted that Trump was being crazy, laughed at his craziness and moved on. They aren't paying attention to the issue anymore. So it doesn't matter what kinds of social media gets posted from Trump MAGA supporters, only those who support Trump will pay any attention. EVERYONE ELSE HAS MOVED ON.

Sadly, I read a poll yesterday showing that a slight majority of Trump voters (leaning+) believe the story. That may be because they haven't heard much about it, other than from the debate.

Vance has escalated his false claims by now blaming Haitians for skyrocketing communicable diseases like HIV and TB, in addition to calling them a drain on public resources, and claiming they are eating cats.
  
  
• When asked if he would denounce the bomb threats, Trump refused to answer. This is a consistent pattern—he doesn’t denounce violence.
  
  
• Trump also said he would deport migrants in Springfield to Venezuela, even though they are from Haiti and are here legally. At best (and there’s been zero evidence of this), there might be a few Haitians who have broken the law by stealing pets and eating them, similar to a rare case involving an American. But even if that were true, not only does it not justify blaming all migrants (as it wouldn’t justify blaming all Americans) for the actions of a few, it absolutely doesn’t justify deporting all migrants.
  

I’m fearful that everyday Trump supporters are being led down this path by him, either staying silent or, worse, actively seeking evidence to justify these hateful claims. The fear is that once a large portion of the nation becomes accustomed to dehumanizing a group, it may also come to accept outrageous actions against that group, as has happened throughout history.

If we’re willing to see children terrorized because of a false rumor about Haitian immigrants, we should ask who abducted our conscience, not someone’s pet.

The accusation that Haitian immigrants in a small Ohio city are abducting and eating their neighbors’ cats and dogs relies not on one falsehood but on a web of them. The rhetoric evokes racist tropes about “savages” who do not conform to our civilized Western world. There’s also a religious angle: the idea that Haitian refugees are voodoo occultists who might be worshipping the devil. As an evangelical Christian who actually believes in the existence of Satan, I agree that we can indeed see the work of the devil at play here, only it’s not on the menu of the Haitian families but rather in the cruelty of those willing to lie about them.

There is little ambiguity about whether Springfield, Ohio, is a hellscape of raptured pets, held at the mercy of marauding refugees. Law enforcement has told the world that there’s no evidence of this behavior, and the mayor and governor have confirmed this. But in the social-media age, none of that matters against A friend I know there knew somebody who said that she knew somebody whose cat was gutted and hanging from a tree. Other conflict entrepreneurs, when asked to provide evidence, sound like a radical deconstructionist in a 1990s faculty lounge, appealing to the “larger reality” of immigrant crime that is so true that the facts of the particular case, even if shown to be untrue, are beside the point.

I hope they catch all these people making threats and charge them with both hate crimes and domestic terrorism! It repulses me that Trump once again refuses to denounce this type violence, and in the same token plays the stupid card once again, acting like he doesn't know anything about these threats. He's a lying SOB unworthy to serve as President of this country.
