It's similar to Kobe and MJ's. Obviously terrible players.

The variance is nuts for sure. Not sure how you raise his efficiency while he gets 20-22 PPG. He's a volume scorer who seems to operate best off of screens and way off the top of the key where he can blow by opponents. He's always "in a rush".

I think the writing is on the wall. He either gets more efficient or he's gone. I'm just not sure he's going to be given the opportunity to "be a bucket" this year which is ultimately what he wants. For Jalen's sake, he better come out hyper efficient from pre-season onwards. Judging by what Amen said, Jalen's likely going to have reduced on ball opportunities this year so he better make the most of them.

Another thing I was thinking that'd be interesting to see is how Jalen scored his points by quarter. It seemed like he has insane *quarters* of play. Not overall games. I vividly remember games where he's 1/6 or something and has a crazy 3rd and finishes 13/22.

I definitely like what trainer Dash is doing here. The pause lets Jalen get in balance and slows down his shot which should help his efficiency. I also like that he is being taught that the pause also gives him another chance to make a pass or attack again.

This sums up your hate and bias. And your comment on Sengun highlights in your other shi+ post is based on what? Sengun has more passing highlights because that’s his game not sure what the point is here other than pettiness. Pretty Small minded.

Are you talking about wizards jordan? He wasn’t great at 38/39. Bulls Jordan was around 8-9% above league average for those years which is awesome. Kobe also never posted a single season below league average till he was 35, he was mostly around 5-6% above the league (obviously worse than jordan but still excellent).

The key point here is TS% simply measures how many points a player scores over the number of possessions where they attempted to score and makes a % out of it. If a player shoots more threes or make their FT’s they have a really good TS% using this metric.

Green had a lower 3pt % for the attempts or offensive possessions he had so his TS% is lower. 45% of his total FGA were 3s. Pretty simple as most of us agree that he needs to improve his 3 pt shooting. But TS% isn’t an all encompassing measurement since you can’t look at TS% and say well this player sucks at scoring or not an efficient scorer since 3 pt shots don’t account for a player’s entire scoring performance. These fans seem to think so but it doesn’t.

Again 55% of his buckets are from 2s as he shot almost 60% less than 5ft, 61% in restricted area, 40% mid range last year (edwards shot 35%). His 2% was .498. Heres others in their 3rd year.

    Book .460
    Lilard .500
    Fox .535
    Young .491
    Edwards .505
    Maxey .513
    Kobe .494

It’s obvious he is a good or efficient scorer in terms of 2 pt shots relative to these notable players. The issue has always been 3 pt shooting. EFG% measures shooting efficiency simply 2s and 3s which he shot .498. Heres others in their 3rd year:

    Edwards .528
    Book .501
    Fox: .513
    Young .499
    Maxey .568
    Kobe .482

Not surprising. Maxey and Edwards were well rounded with a good % in 2s and 3s.

which brings up the point of TS% as an additional metric that helps us understand how well a player scores over the num of possessions he had. But it shouldn’t ever be used alone to determine the level or quality of a player since it takes all scoring into account putting it into a convenient % and doesn’t look at specific types of scoring. No shi+ Curry has a high TS% because he makes a lot of 3s and FTs. No shi+ Rudy Gobert has a high TS% because he doesn’t shoot FT’s but shoots 66-70% in 2s. No shi+ Jalen needs to shoot better in 3s. TS% doesn’t really tell us much we don’t already know by looking at 3pt%/3PA, 2pt%/2PA, FT%/FTA Lol

Seems like Jalen’s working on his pickup too, there’s a couple of times in the video where you can hear Jalen exclaim something like “Ahh my pickup” even if the shot goes in. Good that they’re working on the little things, too. That’s what can really elevate someone’s shooting mechanics

It's pretty simple and Amen alluded to it somewhat with others being on the ball more often, he (Jalen) may get fewer opportunities, I'd just like to see him make the shots he does get at a higher rate (with less variance).
He just can't go 51% of the season shooting 17.5% even if he shoots 50% in the remaining games. That's making those 51% really difficult for the team to win.

Here's a crazy stat that I just crunched the numbers on - 62.7% of Jalen's possessions resulted in either a missed shot or a turnover.
His career average usage is 26.6 .... out of the nba average of 100 possessions per game, that equates to 16.6 lost possessions per game - 16.6 wasted scoring opportunities.

Interesting. It’s no secret he has to shoot 3s better. But How did u come about that number? And what’s the % that resulted in missed shots or TO for other players/scoring guards. I am interested to see what other players/his peers are doing. Puts things in perspective. For instance Booker had 40% of his games shooting.300 or less in 3s in his 3rd year in 54 games. 43% in 2nd year in 78 games. According to this comparison Green obviously had more games shooting.300 than Book in years 2 and 3.

I wouldn’t call a missed shot a “lost possession.” Don’t we usually call a “lost possession” the lack of a shot?

Just go to “per 100 possession” stats of any player and add up missed shots + TOs.

but like I mentioned above, calling a missed shot a “lost possession” is not the way ppl talk about lost possessions.

Last year, Curry had 20.1 “lost possessions” per 100. Edwards had 19.3.

doesn’t really help me to talk about stats like that.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Jalen seems chill about the question of contracts. This also seems to imply there won’t be an extension b4 the deadline.

Yeah it’s arbitrary how these metrics are constructed. TS% for instance does not count and 1s, clear path fouls, transition take fouls, technicals, and three point fouls shots as “taking up possessions”.

I haven't done the numbers for any other player as a percentage of possessions, didn't care to look up each players totals and do the math individually.

For Jalen, it's not about games with .300, it's the large number of games well below that figure (on his regular diet of shots). You can live with .300ish "sometimes", you can't live with the below -

    Last year -

    12 games of .000
    9 games between .100 & .182
    12 games between .183 & .231
11 games between .232 & .300 (anything south of here is unacceptable)
    9 games of .333

That's somewhat balanced statistically out by the 27 games he shot a total of .508 (from 3) between .400 & .833.
These games bring his season average up to something approaching respectability (.332).

It's really hard for a team to win with their highest usage player putting up those numbers in any one game.

Honestly, I expect he improves on his shooting in general - that's a big part of what he's been working on this offseason, I'm just pointing out the numbers.

The numbers I posted above are not arbitrary, they are concrete. The number account for used possessions with a positive or negative outcome.

I did not speak about you. I was speaking to another fan about the arbitrary nature of NBA metrics and what counts as a possession or ending a possession.
