Britannica Dictionary definition of COMMON SENSE [noncount] : the ability to think and behave in a reasonable way and to make good decisions : sound and prudent judgment based on a simple perception of the situation or facts :sound practical judgment that is independent of specialized knowledge, training, or the like; normal native intelligence. :Ordinary good sense or sound practical judgment. When we talk Common Sense we mean these type of definitions but what it really is: : It is a belief that is innate and true to specific sections of society. : Common sense is driven more towards stereotypical beliefs. : Common Sense is defined as routine knowledge that people have of their everyday world and activities. :It is generally based on what may be called naturalistic or individualist explanation. :It is taken for granted knowledge. :It is unexamined. In America - I don't think we have a common enough belief system anymore. I don't think the overlap between groups on what should be "take for Granted Knowledge" is strong enough We can agree that "Killing is wrong", Right? Well. . . not exactly . ..its filled with caveats and nuances that has diluted a basic statement like that We are more complicated. . . . unfortunately we have reached a point where we seem to try to LEGALESE every thing . . . . "Well technically, kind of sortaly, if you look at it from this perspective-ly . . . . ." we can try to weasle out of any accountability about anything. We use it to justify any moral ethical or general failing . We no longer agree on: What it means to "Behave in a reasonable way" What is "sound and prudent judgement" What is "normal native intelligence" There is no "ordinary good sense or sound practical judgement" Rocket River
I'm not sure where you're going with this thread. But, if you can't brook any qualification, then I suppose we can't all agree that killing is wrong. I'd say 99%+ of the killing we do is right.
My point. We . . .as a society SHOULD have a basic level of commonality about what it means to think and behave in a reasonable way. We don't seem to have that anymore In fact there seems to be little we all agree on at all Rocket River
This has a lot to do with the connection between clout and wealth. The more social media influence you have to more bad faith money from bad faith actors get injected. Almost all the right wing media you see online is from people who don't believe in what they say. So common sense isn't the issue here. Insincerity because of money is the issue. No one thinks Dave Rubin or Tim Poole have the talent to naturally earn 100 grand per week with the content they spew but some group of wealthy people do and it isn't because these people have principled positions. It's because it helps their bottom line. So I'm not sure if it's common sense or insincerity that is the bigger issue. Like I'm pretty certain 90% of the right wing posters here who spam embedded links and memes don't really believe in what they type.
"Common sense is not so common" - Voltaire 1764. You're in good company with this observation. I always viewed the ability to detect bullshit as a part of common sense, and then everyone got onto social media and we found out how many people lack bullshit detectors. "Believe nothing you hear, and only one half that you see, unless it comes from a random tweet" - @AroundTheWorld
We often disagree, but I appreciate you. You bring a unique style and often a different perspective to the board. I think we were born in the same year, too.
Atw can form compete sentences. That means he probably doesn't believe in most of the stuff he shares. He exists to "trigger" I'm telling you sincerity is a large part of the issue here. Most people who spread these ridiculous tweets you might believe at face value don't have common sense. The reality is many of them are trolling, are from troll farms from other countries etc.
I don't agree with ATW but he doesn't post ridiculous things, I think for the most part conservative posters post generally accepted views. Tinman spams us about wokeness, even though a lot of the tweets are against your values they aren't outlandish imo and a lot of your values aren't generally accepted. Being accepted or not doesn't make something extreme or ridiculous or whatever but ATW or Tinman isn't extreme, just conservative in their politics
What you define as "values" I define as "a massive influx of misinformation unverified to shut down actual realm discussion" This isn't a difference in values. It's a difference in how we view spreading information.
I just read Voltaire's passage on common sense. You'll find it interesting. His conclusion is basically that we lack common sense when we have insincere beliefs - when we deceive ourselves into believing things we know to not be true. So according to Voltaire, an insincere person lacks common sense. https://www.gutenberg.org/files/18569/18569-h/18569-h.htm#Common_Sense "People say sometimes—"Common sense is very rare." What does this phrase signify? that in many men reason set in operation is stopped in its progress by prejudices, that such and such man who judges very sanely in one matter, will always be vastly deceived in another. This Arab, who will be a good calculator, a learned chemist, an exact astronomer, will believe nevertheless that Mohammed put half the moon in his sleeve. ... All this terrifies the good Arab, his wife, his sister, all his little family into a state of panic. They have good sense about everything else, but on this article their imagination is wounded, as was the imagination of Pascal, who continually saw a precipice beside his armchair. But does our Arab believe in fact in Mohammed's sleeve? No. He makes efforts to believe; he says it is impossible, but that it is true; he believes what he does not believe. On the subject of this sleeve he forms in his head a chaos of ideas which he is afraid to disentangle; and this veritably is not to have common sense."
