Where were the rock bands? Do they not exist? No young people playing guitar anymore? Where was the Linda Linda lindas? I think they’re under 18 still and would’ve been perfect for the show. What about sleater kenney? They just dropped a new album, MTV couldn’t get them to perform? Why is everything pop and rap and dance choreography out the ying yang? You don’t need to choreograph anything. Your personality and guitar playing on the stage is all you need. Am I out of touch?

I didn't even know this was a thing anymore, for decades.

Looked at the winners, and my Indian with the H-Town limp Hanumankind's Big Dawgs didn't sweep. Will not be watching next year.

Proverbial "I've never heard of any of these people" post.

Also, proverbial "MTV is still a thing?" post.

I do like me some MTV Classic though. Especially Metal Mania. And 120 Minutes. And it's my go-back during Astros commercial breaks.

This has pretty much been the case since maybe the early 2000s brief Strokes-led rock revival (includes White Stripes and a few others).

There's a lot of good rock bands that are big and will sell out decent sized venues in a millisecond, but they just don't have the Kardashian-esque modern tabloid appeal that's required to move the dial for social media or other lowest common denominator media outlets like whatever pile of excrement still remains of MTV.

Like, I don’t have a problem with new musical acts, the vma is to promote new artists and songs. Just a couple of rock bands is all I’m asking.

I was channel surfing and saw it was on, surprised it was on the middle of the week. Watched for a few minutes while some mindless girl lip synch a song I had never heard and then quickly turned the channel

Admittedly, I skimmed the video, but he's out of touch. No acknowledgement of Electronic (EDM) in the video.

MTV used to be must watch TV. I can't even remember the last time I watched something else besides ridiculousness on there.

    Oh Boomer Beato…

Seriously though the thing that’s different in today’s music culture is the individuality of making music or writing songs. It’s more efficient and more personal and I think mostly better to be inside your head and have the ability with Ableton or Reason to instantly capture these moments of creativity. Then run with it from that point on.

The beauty and curse of bands though is getting a group together to figure out stuff and create together. I’ve been in bands my entire life and it’s so incredibly frustrating at the lack of efficiency that “rock bands” are able to create good stuff, but every once in awhile magic happens.

The big secret here in “bands vs individual artists” is that actually the Beatles weren’t really a band in the traditional sense. Their method was for each individual to bring their songs pretty much done to recording sessions and the other members were basically producers in the same way Jack Antonoff is to Taylor Swift.

So Taylor, Chappell Roan, Charlie XCx, etc… there’s really nothing different that they are doing that the Beatles didn’t do. They just might be using a little more synths and less live drumming that the Beatles but the song making process isn’t much different. Just different tools that makes it more efficient and probably too easy to plug in a synth instead of trying to use mic’ed up instruments for color… and of course their songs aren’t nearly as good for the most part.

I mean imagine Olivia Rodrigo having so many great pop songs in her back pocket that she decided to just do a meddly for the back half of her new albums and mash 8 or 9 of them up in a cool interesting way where you get about 45 seconds of Vampire… just insane what the Beatles were able to create in such a short period of time.

Where are the “rock bands”… well most of them suck anyways that’s why they aren’t there because creating music as a band is not the best way to write interesting music and usually leads to dudes just recording power cords. Fun to play with the boys but not really ground breaking music.

Also the only thing that makes a “rock” song to many people is the distortion guitar pedal. The Boss DS1 being the staple for what defines the sound of every 90’s “alt rock” band.

If you use a Boss DS1 on Sabrina Carpentar’s “Taste” and give her a “band” name like “The Blood Carpenters” then you basically have a “Rock Band” performing at the VMA’s.

Glorifying of “the rock band” is kind of silly. You are basically just glorifying a distortion pedal.

Did you just compare those clowns to the freaking Beatles? And how come you didn’t name any Spanish pop artists? Heck Karol G is better than them. I’m sure there are plenty of rock bands you just gotta do a little research which that’s what the mtv talents evaluators should be doing and not rely on social media engagement numbers
