Must have been the darkest 3-4 years. I have come around on him but those 4 years were really crappy.

FVV has become too indispensable. The young Rockets got quicker faster than I expected. Earlier in this thread, I thought FVV getting traded this coming deadline was the likeliest outcome. I currently think the young Rockets might be good enough now that FVV is kept and possibly extended.

FVV was a good signing, the perfect person to have next to the younger guys, but if he is extended that means some of those younger guys didn't really pan out. A FVV extension means that Amen and Reed are not good enough. I think our younger guys are going to be too good to be able to afford to extend FVV. Fred is 30 years old, so he is likely going to want one more big contract for 3-5 years. We may pick up his third year though.

If he gets declined he could do something like 4/100. At that point, with the cap he could be a 3rd guard and play 25 mpg, so him resigning doesn’t necessarily mean reed or amen failed

Yes but the poster meant that he could very well get a 30+ million in 2 years elsewhere on the market......if he wants that last hurrah big contract.

    • Someone like FVV who is good enough to be a 1st Lead guard on a mediocre team can still get paid 30 million in 2 years.

    • Of course if he stays healthy barring any career threatening injury.

He would be 31 years old and taking a 40% pay cut to become a back up after doing exactly what he was meant to do here. He was an all-star two years ago, I just don't see him giving us that much of a discount on what is likely his last big contract. He has done everything he came here to do, why go from playing 37 minutes a game to 25 and taking a massive pay cut. We were the 11th seed, he has a ring, not exactly the type of scenario one would take a discount for.

I would not be mad either way, he would be crazy to take that pay cut and play 24 minutes a game as a bench shooter.

He hasn't done that since he was a young rookie and sophomore.

FVV getting extended would mean a couple of the young guys are ready now. If the young guys are good enough, the 2nd apron penalties don't really hurt the Rockets. I doubt the 2nd apron will be a problem until Reed is ready for an extension. I wouldn't extend FVV to more than one year after Reed is eligible to be on an extentsion (limiting high contract years to 1 year).

It’s all up to supply and demand. Who else will pay FVV a substantial bag. He has done exactly what we wanted him to do, which is be a solid contributor and mentor to a very young team. He was a great fit for the Rockets. Tell me what other team will give the max on his next contract?

Who said anything about a max? Keep in mind what the new max contracts are. The post was about taking a 40% discount from his current comp. He would be 31 and in his prime, and has done everything that was asked of him, I don't see how you reduce his minutes by 33% as proposed and then cut his salary by 40%. I just don't see what the sales pitch is here. He has a ring, its not like we are close to contending , so why would he take a discount?

This is a recent all-star guard in his prime, you really think he will be ok taking a bench role in his prime? Tell me, what is the sales pitch to a 31 year old all-star starting guard that has a championship ring, to take a bench role and a 40% pay cut? Any team that does not have a starting PG will be picking up the phone. I think there will be teams offering him 2/$80M or 3/$120M just like the rockets did, but it really depends on needs and timing, you never know there is a ton of variability in contracts amongst comparable players, i mean just look at what happened w Caleb Martin from poor negotiating. Even if things align and you get him to sign a 4/$100M deal, the bigger hurdle would be getting a 31 year old all star guard to take a bench role.

The places I think he would play for a discount are maybe Chicago because he is from Illinois.

And another Raptor DeRozan played there not long ago.

There is no team in Kansas City (College is Wichita State)......it moved to Sacramento......Sacramento being another team I think is a good situation for him if Fox is injured.

I think a discount is more likely than him taking a bench role here or elsewhere. He is too good and too young to be taking a bench role. Contracts can vary greatly depending on timing and need and market at the given moment, so maybe he takes a cut, but a bench role at this stage seems improbable.

Houston is not a bad option for him, they believed in him after he had that below average season at the end with Nurse.

I would not rule it out however he also played himself into the minds of other teams for sure.

Quality PGs are very rare these days, depending on much money teams can free up.

Guys like Tyus Jones barely got a contract.....and Trae Young had a bad trade stock .... we will see.

you think money is the ultimate retainer? You forgot how much pull cities like LA and Miami have.

I’m not even promoting keeping FVV. I was mainly just saying supply and demand will determine what FVV will accept. I don’t want him past this year or worst the year after. I want Amen to be our PG and I think the Rockets will make every effort to get him ready. Sheppard will be lucky to ever get to FVV level on defense. Like FVV, he does not have the explosiveness to get to the rim. He is a great shooter and that might force him onto the floor with Amen, but as the SG on offense. I don’t really think FVV would want to comeback as a bench player. I do think that the demand for his services will force him into a smaller salary, unless he is traded in a package or from a team that wants him as a one year rental. All bets would be off, if he is the pg that leads us to the semi-finals or better.

Amen is not nor will he ever be an NBA point guard. I love him as a prospect but that’s just not going to be his role in the league
