He's not taking a discount. It's preposterous. Before people bring up Brady, remember that he comes from an already well off upbringing. it's easy to not care about money when money has been no big deal your whole life. For guys like CJ, others. They grew up dirt poor. Try telling them they shouldn't get as much money as they deserve. Yeah I can see Mahomes taking discounts since his dad was a pro player and they had money growing up, not CJ.
You make a valid point, but considering the insane salary inflation the last few years for the NFL's top paid players, I'm not sure the same logic will apply going forward. To be clear though, I believe it is doubtful CJ will take a discount from the Texans when he re-signs.
I thought this was amazing. But its not accurate. Brad Johnson, Drew Brees and Matt Stafford all were after their rookie deals
I get the principle but a 5-15% “discount” on multiple hundred million dollar contract is not dependent on how much income their parents made. That being said a “discount” is not to be expected
Pay CJ the going market rate and pay him ASAP. Afterwards, pay complementary skill position players below market for the ability to play with a superstar, generational QB. These are one, two year deals for guys looking to ball out and move on to bigger paydays along with draft picks on low money contracts. The value of CJ lies within here. You pay him a lot, but he produces so much on the field and saves you on other areas, as well. He doesn't need a top paid WR. He needs someone looking to become a top paid WR. He doesn't need a top paid RB. He needs someone looking to become a top paid RB. CJ, at his best, is a springboard for free agents looking to ball out. The revolving door will be multitudinous, but CJ will be the fulcrum, all things going right of course.
Yep! Lets just hope the cap keeps increasing with all the increase in International popularity. Thats a deep bag.
These dudes are taking a page out of LeBron James contract negotiations and wanting short term deals. It’s the reason, according to SaS and Dallas beat writers, that Dak Padstats had issues with his original contract. JJ wanted a long term 7-10 yr deal and Dak wanted 4yrs.
If CJ doesnt see himself long in Houston that may play a factor in it. He may want to go back to Cali eventually. Either way contract talks will average close to 60Ms per year.
Im a cup half empty planner. Spot the variables and produce a contingency. Bright side is that we would probably get a historic haul for CJ if he ever wanted out. Cal may need to offer him a franchise stake to further sweeten the deal.
That won’t ever happen. There’s machinations within the NFL bylaws that forbid any sort of ownership by current players. If a player wants a piece of an NFL team they’re gonna have to do like Tom Brady and wait till retirement. By the way Brady had to jump through a ton of hoops to get approval for his minority stake in the Raiders.
Nope not happening. Only franchise qb I’ve seen wanted out was DW4 and now we see he wasn’t a franchise qb. Tommy Boy would give CJ stake in the franchise before he lets him go.
I think he DOES see himself in Houston. He has his charity based here. don't know if that accounts for anything. The only Houston club friendly deal I can think of is Altuve. there might be others but I suspect the list is very small. "Hometown discounts" and the "There is no state tax" are mirages.
There is no place like home. I hope CJ puts down roots and stays here forever. He would save a bunch of money doing so!
QBs would usually only want out if the organization was a joke. Deshaun is a creep but he saw how BoB and Easterby were torpedo-ing the franchise so it wasn't dumb to demand a trade. If we are a well run organization, CJ will stay
