Yep and you can tell that this guy has no idea what the Bay Area is really like. Especially for a pro athlete living “in the Bay Area” and commuting to the arena is completely different than assuming that they literally have to live in downtown Oakland.

Even if they did have to live in Oakland, Berkeley is basically part of Oakland and while kind of cramped, is extremely expensive but really nice. You can go up the hills a little bit and get some fantastic views with a property that has big redwoods too. You can get a nice view of the golden gate and Alcatraz.

But I’m assuming they all live on the other side of the bridge in Palo Alto. Gives them better access to SFO and the San Fran amenities.

People who write this kind of stuff obviously have never been to the Bay Area in general. Yeah Oakland is a little rough in certain spots but overall it’s really one of the most beautiful metroplex’s in the world with a ton of variety within an hours drive. I know that DFW has more Texas Roadhouse’s and all but I personally prefer having some natural beauty instead of flat, dry concrete laden metroplex’s like DFW or Houston (even though I do love Houston… it’s still home).

I love Houston too! I witnessed some scary, dangerous stuff in four years within the loop, including having a gun pulled on me and having my apartment broken into and trashed by a crazy person (crazy, crazy long story and only time I've ever had to break a lease, and with landlord's blessing). Many of my Rice friends got mugged or assaulted on the streets in otherwise nice Southwest H'Town. But (maybe because taller than them and not being a clueless version of a dork?) I overall felt safe, day to day. Loved my time there, would not trade it, and I've loved going back.

In a quarter century in SF, I haven't experienced any violent crime, and no home break-ins, and rates of violent crime are falling. Around the year 2000, I did have two car break-ins, but no vehicle theft yet. I feel really safe here, though I've definitely seen more street people than in Houston. That's more sad than dangerous, in 99% of cases. When I saw a guy sitting outside of Walgreens last week, asking for change, I went inside and bought him some trailmix for $1 and talked to him a little. He seemed developmentally challenged but really appreciated getting trail mix. In my day to day, I don't see that many homeless people.

I assume the new thread posting probably involves Pearsal or Pinesol or whatever. What a bad pick by the Niners, and what a stupid thing to do, fighting a young, jittery kid who pulls a gun on you. The story is so weird. Crime here is often committed by people coming from some other area, but... Tracy? That's a long way off, near Sacramento! So, a dumb kid from Tracy (high school age) comes all the way to the city with a handgun and decides to try to rob an obviously very fit young guy in broad daylight? Doesn't make much sense, unless like a gang initiation or something. Glad nobody got killed, and yeah, of course, more hyperbolic bad press for this city. "Unlivable hellhole," etc. Media loving it, and we who live here keep joking about it. And Niners must hate their 1st round selection more than ever.

Hope everyone has a great Labor Day, even the FOXans, fake Texans who handed their brains over to Rupert Murdoch's nonstop soul rot.

Interesting story for y'all about foreigner Rupert's start in America: It was in Texas and he was defaming -- what do you know -- an otherwise interesting city, circa 1973.

    ---
Murdoch saw an underserved audience, one that loved Nixon, wanted the United States to fight on to victory in Vietnam, was wary of the changes brought by the civil rights movement and, perhaps as much as anything else, had a secret yen for the lurid, the titillating and the sensational. “We’re not here to pass ourselves off as intellectuals,” Murdoch said. “We’re here to give the public what they want.”

His first attempt to give them what they wanted came in San Antonio, where he bought a stodgy afternoon daily called The News and turned it into what he called “a screamer.” The News delivered blazing headlines about rape and murder ... The articles were often wildly exaggerated, and even his own publisher confessed to a reporter that he had the “gnawing feeling” that accuracy was slipping. Local leaders protested, including Emil Peters, the chief of the San Antonio Police Department, who complained that Murdoch was falsely portraying the city as “a crime capital.”

Yup, dude has been doing the same crap to make big $ of scaring people for 50 years. Good formula for FOX profit, terrible formula for the people. Oh well. I don't excuse people turning their brain over to that formula; it's a definite choice every time you turn on cable news or click those inflammatory Rupert links.

You sound like you don't know the Bay if you want to say Berkeley is nice. Most of Berkeley is a dump and no athlete is going to live there. When the East Bay had sports teams, many athletes lived in Lafayette, Danville, Moraga/Orinda, San Ramon, etc. Steph Curry moved from I believe Lafayette or Orinda to Atherton (peninsula town) only once the Warriors left Oakland for SF.

If you look around the world, there are many rundown looking places set in beautiful geographic settings. The Bay Area is one of the most beautiful settings in the world, with awesome microclimates. But a lot of the side BS makes that geography nice for visits only, not to live.

I never said I lived there, but I have had to be there alot for work. I also never said I would choose to spend what is necessary to live there in the areas I'd want to live. However most of the people who love to have the strongest opinions about San Fran/Oakland know it a whole lot less than I do. Obviously you do since you know how amazing the geography is, and the climate.

However even as just a visitor myself, I at least know that if an athlete making 20 mil a year had to live in the Oakland area (which many of them I'm sure don't have to because of the easy access to Peninsula) there are still some amazing properties on the Oakland side. I might not be a Bay Area specialist, but I know enough to know about some of those spots up on the hill with that view of the Bay. My company usually hosts our conferences up at the Claremont so I probably have been around that area the most. Hosted some stuff out in San Ramon as well. Some stunning properties out in the hills and redwoods. It's not like an athlete would have to live literally in downtown or by the docks.

One city I do know like the back of my hand though is Houston. These same folks that make the case about San Fran being too liberal and that driving away professional athletes would think nothing of Houston being an alternative town for athletes. When in reality you could go photograph some parts of Telephone Rd and put them side by side to any photo of Oakland and make a pretty good case for athletes to choose the Bay Area over Houston because of "Right wing state politics".
