Namibia plans to kill more than 700 animals including elephants and hippos — and distribute the meat

Namibia is planning to kill more than 700 wild animals, including elephants, zebras and hippos, and distribute the meat to the people struggling with food insecurity as the country grapples with its worst drought in 100 years.

The animals set to be culled include 83 elephants, 30 hippos, 60 buffalo, 50 impala, 100 blue wildebeest and 300 zebras, the country’s Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism announced Monday.

They will come from national parks and communal areas with “sustainable game numbers” and will be killed by professional hunters, the ministry said in a press release.

The aim of the program is to help alleviate the impacts of drought in the southwest African country, the ministry said.

Namibia declared a state of emergency in May as the impacts of drought worsened. An estimated 1.4 million people — around half the population — are expected to face high levels of acute food insecurity.

The culling program will take pressure off water resources by reducing wildlife in areas where their numbers “exceed available grazing and water,” the ministry said.

It also aims to reduce the potential for conflicts between elephants and humans, which can increase during drought when animals’ search for food and water can bring them into contact with people.

“To this effect, 83 elephants from identified conflict areas will be culled, (and) meat will be allocated to the drought relief programme,” the ministry said.

Southern Africa is a stronghold for elephants, home to more than 200,000. These animals have also been negatively affected by drought, with hundreds believed to have died across the region last year as their water sources dried up.

Meat from other animals set to be killed will also be distributed to those struggling with hunger, according to the ministry, which pointed to people living in rural areas as being particularly affected.

More than 150 animals have already been killed, providing more than 125,000 pounds of meat, the ministry said.

“We are happy that we can assist the country in this very difficult time and when its absolutely needed,” it said...

Meanwhile we throw away 30-40% of our own food supply.

Sad. Maybe that's more of a cry for help than anything. I hope they don't go through with it, and that they can solve their food crisis in some other way.

I know some posters here might hate this but I think they should eat chicken. The timber wolves owner is in that industry maybe he can help

This is not about a food crisis. This is about a drought. The animals are using a ton of the water supply. They aren't doing it for the meat. They just aren't wasting it.

Dam..........I am grateful not to ever have to experience this and I feel horrible for those people. Your right, we throw more food away and its ridiculous, the portion size in the US seems to be double compared to any country I have been to. I am as guilty as the next guy about throwing food out and then you hear a story like this and you have to feel for these people

If I am reading the article correctly, these animals that are being slaughtered, I hate that word in this instance, are being farmed in from sustainable wild life breeding programs. It is a sad but necessary need.
I was amazed to see there are over 200,000 elephants there. So that is good.

Seems to be primarily about addressing the drought.

The meat will be donated to people struggling with food insecurity, which was taking place before the drought (although probably worsened by it).

That’s a lot of meat but in a country of about 2.6 million I doubt it makes much of a long term solution to food insecurity. This seems far more about reducing population pressure on wildlife from the drought.

I've never really understood the concern with food waste. Especially given how fat we are.

Like yeah, you want to strive for 100% efficiency. But excess energy/resources are inevitable in a prosperous society.

They're not endangered...and people gotta eat.

Culling overpopulated animals is a very beneficial thing for the environment.

See, for a local example: deer and hogs in Texas

Yeah... I like to eat too. Just ate a few tilapia, in fact. But we can't consume our way out of climate change and the threat of mass extinction. At some point we're going to have to change ourselves.

And threatened or not, elephants are extremely intelligent. (I know, I know... just something I wrestle with.)

    Oh no, tilapia?

    From where?
