Yes, they probably are if they think guns cause violence. Switzerland has a ton of guns, among the highest per capita in the world, but relatively little violence. Mexico is incredibly violent and has strict gun control. The homicide rate in Mexico is 50 times higher than in Switzerland, even though Switzerland has mandatory gun ownership and Mexico has outlawed guns. The UK has very strict gun control, but their homicide rate is over twice that of Switzerland. Why aren't all the Swiss guns killing people? It is because the Swiss people aren't killing people. Here is another problem with the theory that it is the guns that are the problem. Non-Hispanic white people have by far the highest rate of gun ownership in the United States, but their homicide rate is roughly on par with places like the UK, where gun ownership is strictly controlled. Some other groups in the United States with lower rates of gun ownership have much higher homicide rates. If guns are the problem, why does gun ownership not strongly correlate with homicide rate? Do the white Americans own special guns that don't kill people?

Black students are hugely overrepresented as both shooters and victims in school shootings. 10 years. 180 school shootings. 356 victims. CNN examined 10 years of shootings on K-12 campuses across the US. You're right, some are sensationalized even though they are essentially statistically insignificant, while others are downplayed even though they make up the majority of gun murders in America. Guns don't lead to violence, that is the point. Guns are a tool. Violent people lead to violence. And yes, there are violent white people. No one has said there are not. Are you aware that white people make up 60% of the US population but only 54% of your chart (which uses one particular definition of mass shooting, results are differents if you use the Gun Violence Archive definition, for example). Black people are 12% of the population and make up 17% of your chart. Oops. Saws are most commonly used to cut wood. Guns are most commonly used to punch small holes in paper or bounce lead off of steel (certainly in America). Tons of guns are designed and marketed to people who have no intention to ever use them to kill and who never do use them to kill. Sorry, I haven't touched a gun in years, haven't fired one in over a decade, and have never owned one. They are not my hobby, I am just not statistically illiterate. Good guys when it comes to gun related deaths are those that prevent them (sometimes by killing those who are trying to cause them to other people. You are incredibly unlikely to lose your children to gun violence. Yes, the liberty of people to own guns is much higher than the liberty to avoid the very small chance that someone will kill your child (or the even smaller chance that they would kill your child if guns are legal, but would not do so if guns were illegal. You do not at all understand liberty if you think imposition of controls for marginal potential increases in safety is liberty.
So guns aren't the main problem in the United States. But since people are unwilling or unable to address and undertake the steps to discover and correct the problem, then sensible restrictions might be part of the best solution.
They don't get that by taking guns away you're only hurting the law-abiding citizens. Criminals will get it no matter what law you have in place, a law-abiding citizen would not. Imagine a place like Texas where most people are armed, n they still break into people's houses knowing they might lose their life over it, imagine at what rate they would be breaking-in if they knew people aren't armed. America has like 5X as many guns per capita than Switzerland does. The murder rate in the USA is like 10-11 per 100,000 and 6-7 per 100,000 in Switzerland. So, it isn't really all that different per capita, and the difference is quite possibly because we have 5 times as many firearms. Also Switzerland has mandatory conscription, and those that are conscripted have to keep their firearms, and that is where a lot of the gun ownership in Switzerland comes from - reserves and officers keep their guns until they are no longer in the reserves. All of these people are very well trained in guns use and in the USA a lot of states don't even require any training.
