Dana came in to the team as a guy who could draft with the best of them. He will ultimately be judged on that. Lunhow was great in all facets. Hard to follow that up.
Dana will rebuild the minor league system. I like Dana and think he's going to be a fine GM. But this is the Stros window and adding a MLB avg bat should have happened even if it cost more than Dana wanted to pay. Just remember Dana is new at the job. He will learn, unfortunately learning on the job is tough when you've got a championship roster. The next two off-seasons are going to decide how long the run lasts. Hopefully Dana is up to the job and Crane gives him the resources he needs to be successful. I would give Dana autonomy and let him go. I doubt Crane will do this. Because of the Abreu, LzMJ , Montero screwups it looks like Crane is going to have to go over the tax line if the team wants to remain contenders.
The GM has to have a vision that is shared by the organization as a whole. Dana is showing he might not necessarily make the sexy moves that get a rise from ESPN writers and personalities, but they do look like they have positive impact on the team. Time will tell if Dana can hold on to the guys he truly values as potential stalwarts. Because for the price of a mid season rental, it will cost a team a potential start. Everyone can identify the superstar once they are running in stride, but it’s eyeing them before other GM’s fawn over them.
Dana may have found the bat that he was unable to trade for when he signed Gamel off of the street. Is Gamel playoff eligible?
They are changing the rules so often these days it's difficult to be sure, but under the old rules, the answer would be yes. The cutoff used to be about Sept 1 for post season eligibility which was also about the same time as roster expansion.
Yes, he should be. https://www.mlb.com/glossary/transactions/postseason-roster-rules-eligibility Postseason Roster Rules & Eligibility Definition In a typical season, any player who is on the 40-man roster or 60-day injured list as of 11:59 p.m. ET on Aug. 31 is eligible for the postseason. Those on the restricted list at that point are also eligible if they haven't been suspended for performance-enhancing drugs during that season. (All players who have served a suspension for PEDs in a given season are ineligible for postseason play that year.) A player who doesn't meet said criteria for postseason eligibility can still be added to a team's roster in the postseason via petition to the Commissioner's Office if the player was in the organization on Aug. 31 and is replacing someone who is on the injured list and has served the minimum amount of time required for activation. (For example, a player on the 10-day injured list who has been on it for at least 10 days, or a player who has been on the 60-day injured list for at least 60 days.) Players who are acquired in September or after are ineligible. Postseason roster rules Teams submit a 26-man roster (it was 25, prior to 2020) prior to each round of the postseason comprised of postseason-eligible players. A club may request permission from the Commissioner's Office to replace a player who is injured during the course of a series, but that player is then ineligible for the rest of that round and the subsequent round, if there is one. A pitcher may be replaced only by another pitcher, and a position player only by another position player. Teams carry extra players throughout the postseason in the event of injuries, and those players, as well as players on the injured list, can be in the dugout during games, within reason.
Meh. Usually if a guy is able to hang around for 9 years there’s something that a lot of teams like about him. So while the odds of him being a star player over a long sample are small, there’s plenty of reason for optimism that he can be a solid bottom of the order hitter, which is really all the Astros need right now.
I think Whitcomb can be the same. If Bregman can get back to 3b and Tucker gets, we can field a solid lineup. Altuve Bregman Alvarez Tucker Diaz Pena Caratini Whitcomb/Gamel Meyers Diaz and/or Caratini should get plenty of time at 1b over the next month. We have the best pitching staff in the majors. We just need health to take this all the way.
"Great in all Facets." That is a Lie. Released JD Martinez David Stearns wasn't kept in the Astros Front Office and left for Milwaukee and then NY Mets. David Stearns traded a broken Carlos Gomez and Snitch Mike Fiers for Josh Hader, Adrian Houser, Brett Phillips, Domingo Santana. Mets didn't want to trade for Carlos Gomez because of his health, his bad hips. Scott Boras lied about his health. Carlos Gomez has a bad temper and can't control himself, swings at terrible pitches. Roberto Osuna, violence against his woman. Traded Ken Giles for him. Media even more hateful against the Astros. Jeff Luhnow trading for terrible players and human beings. If JD Martinez, Josh Hader, Adrian Houser were kept, the Astros would've won those lost World Series.
And it didn’t even come from rvo. This is like complaining about jordan missing shots or brady missing throws
He isn't a star But he is a guy who has hit RHP as good or better than any of our OF's not named Yordan or Kyle, neither of whom are available right now
JD would have been gone after 2017 when he became a free agent, so he could have helped us in 2015 and 2016.
