I know they are waiting for the September deadline. Forest Whitley has been dominating AAA. It reminds me a lot of what I use to see with Lance McCullers in the lower levels. Lance's curve was missing barrels by 10inches with regularity. Forest has finally synced up his fastball with his off speed via his release. All while locating that fastball in the upper tier of the zone. And he isnt missing barrels by a little. Guys are looking completely over matched. I would not be shocked at all if he is our 6th inning guy if we hold on to our postseason invitation.
I’m ready to go to battle with those lineups. But I’d much rather Whitcomb or Dezenzo or McCormick kick some ass over the next few weeks to claim a spot. But yeah Caratini is badass and really mitigates the risk.
I have been higher on Whitley than almost everybody and I hope he is given ample chance to make next years opening day roster but I want zero to do with him pitching in the playoffs this year.
Really? Stuff is what plays in the postseason. Guys are a bit more anxious and willing to expand/do too much. He has top tier closer stuff and has been largely unhittable for the last 15 IP
It's pretty simple to me, if they thought Whitely could help he would be on the roster, they clearly don't so he isn't. I wouldn't mind seeing him, but I trust their judgement on pitchers.
Yeah- if those guys kick ass over the next 6 weeks and claim a spot I'd rather they do it at the expense of Dubon than Caratini, personally. I don't know how much of a badass he is but he's having a career season this year and he's a guy you can always count on for a professional AB seemingly. So is Dubon when he's not playing every day but playing enough to stay sharp. He needs to play somewhere between 2 and 4 times a week to be his best I bet.
Why? Here is your playoff pitching roster: Framber/Brown/JV/Kikuchi/Blanco/Arrighetti/Hader/Abreu/Presley/Scott/Ort/ in the WC and Divisional series (hope we don't play in the WC). Add Dubin as a mop up guy when we get to 7 game series and that's 12 for those 2 series. I can't imagine I'd want Neris to pitch before any of the first 10 guys named, and the last 2 are just guys to soak innings in a loss (or deal with a, 18 inning 0-0 game I guess.
Fits in close to what I would expect. 95 wins is the number that puts you in a great position. Astros would need to finish 27-11. That is tough, but doable. The downside is we are in the hardest part of the schedule. The plus side is we nearly control our fate. 4 against the Royals, 4 against the Orioles, and 3 against the Guardians.
93 wins is my hope/expectation. That’s 25-15 over the rest of the year. But anywhere from 86 wins to 96 wins is reasonably possible. 40 games is a lot left to play.
What if someone gets hurt. Also prevents anyone else from picking him up. Right now we have Ferguson, Dubin, King & Martinez that will get innings these last 6 weeks. Would you want to replace any of those with Neris? It is okay if that answer is no, but if the answer is yes, they should kick the tires on him.
That would be a 38-12 finishing kick to the year. That's pretty freaking amazing if that were to happen. And yeah, 95 wins is my stretch goal for the team. It would definitely get us a bye and maybe the 1 seed in all of baseball.
So what's going on with Montero? 3 scoreless games in Sugar Land. Could he be called up if he promises to check his ego at the door?
Why Neris? Because I would trust a guy who's pitched in the most high leverage situation a player could be in (the playoffs and the World Series), and not only pitched in it, but also successful. I would trust him over Ort or Dubin and even Arrighetti. Not anyone can be lock down coming out of the pen. I'll go with the guy who held up under that kind of pressure (WS) as opposed to a guy who's never pitched in the playoffs and piss all over himself.
Nope. Nope Nope They miraculously got him off the 40 man. Don't undo that greatness by bringing him back! Once back on they have no way to put him back in the minors. Keep him there or release him.
