I found a piece that said he will be held out until the road trip. He is taking batting practice and is fielding grounders, so that is something.
1979 was the first year I watched but since it was 1979 and I wasn't near any MLB parks, it was just Saturday games when they were on the game of the week. Just looking at Astros history over the years I really wish I had seen more of him, but I did meet him once in Cocoa, Florida at spring training.
I met J R. Richard when I was 9 years old. At the time I thought he must have been the largest man in the world.
On MLB.COM it says he was hitting and taking grounders before the game yesterday and was trying to talk Espada into putting him in the lineup. If he was going to miss more than 5 or 6 games, (4 already) they would have IL'd him. He will be back today or tomorrow IMO
Well we are starting to see exactly what you would expect from a revolving door at first base, defensive lapses and miscues. So just from that aspect I would like to see Singleton play most days. He takes walks so he's not an OBP disaster.
Most of us never saw him play for the Astros in his prime. Of course, his numbers were fantastic and hard to ignore for a 6 or 7 year span. He would’ve been hall of fame had he done that for a little while longer. Not sure why he fell off so fast. He was pretty much mentally insane, apparently. That is probably why. His last decent year for the Astros was 1980 and his last year in his prime was like 4 or 5 years before that.
Caratini reminds me of what Garver meant to Texas last year (340 ABs, .270 BA, 19 HR, 50 RBI, .870 OPS). He lengthened the lineup. So use Caratini in the same manner! That bat must be in the lineup.
He's just a disaster against LHP. Unplayable really. I agree that you don't need a different 1b over there every day like we seemingly have. Platoon 2 guys. If you want to do singleton against RHP and Diaz against LHP (for him to get his catching rest) that's fine too. But not as much as we've seen, probably.
Jon has been a disaster vs LHP, that’s for sure. He may very well be unplayable, like you said. The one thing I will say to that is that the sample is still kinda small at 67 at bats. If he had just a couple of good games against LHP those optics would get a lot better. Up to this point though I cannot argue that the numbers are eye poppingly bad against LHP.
