He is listed as 6' 2' - 6' 3". So he has the length - stretch for First Base. He has enough speed to steal some bases, so should be enough speed to play the Outfield as well.
What I don't quite get is the Astros philosophy of just throwing any IF at 1B with no real training in the minors. It's not really Dezenzo's (or Yainer's, or...) fault, that stuff is not easy.
He's only played 11 games in the outfield in his 7 years between college and the minors. Maybe he said that not to offend Bregman. I would sure hope he's being groomed for 3B once Bregman signs for 35 million a year with someone.
He's only played first base in 6 games. So that's probably not his landing spot. Agreed you just don't get thrown at 1B and it turns out miraculously. We didn't even trust Loperfido at 1B and he had extensive experience but not a lot lately.
Brown said that exact quote, implying that Whitcomb will be an OF in the future. I love it. A utility IF who can play the OF and hit more than his weight is a brilliant thing. eta...speaking of weight, I had no idea Whitcomb was so huge. I can understand why he couldn't stick at SS
The Astros aren't as reactionary as fans. If Dezenzo was killing it he would be playing everyday, but as is they are just trying to spread the ABs around to see who can catch fire.
We play 18 games in a row starting with this White Sox series. JV is poised to start either Tuesday or Wednesday. Perfect time to go to the 6 man rotation.
Short for his position, traditionally. yes great fielder though. It really is more about picking it than jumping for it in MLB.
I was just saying that a major league first baseman needs to be more adept at picking the ball rather than being tall. That’s it. You think you need to give a lesson on all the nuances of playing 1B? Get back to your bottle.
