The fact that the traditional gatekeepers (traditional media) chose not to publish "hacked" Trump's campaign material didn’t get much attention.

Their decision boiled down to two things: 1) the source was unknown (even though the Trump campaign confirmed the hack and claimed it was by Iranians), and 2) if it really is Iranian, should they be a mouthpiece for them?

It’s rare to see two similar situations we can directly compare, but this might be one of those times.

Case 1 - News organizations decided the source wasn’t reliable enough to run with the Hunter Biden laptop story.

Reaction: The right went into outrage mode, crying media bias, suppression of speech, and even a government conspiracy to bury the story.

Meanwhile, the same media that didn’t want to be a mouthpiece for a foreign adversary (though I doubt they’d stick to that if the source was confirmed as reliable) had Trump openly calling for Russia to interfere in our election and dig up Clinton’s emails to publish them.

Case 2 - News organizations decided the source wasn’t reliable enough to publish the hacked content related to Trump’s VP picks (and other possible material).

Reaction: No outrage. Instead, most praise the media for being cautious and waiting it out. Harris isn’t calling on Iranians to publish the material.

There’s a clear difference between the two parties.

News outlets were leaked insider material from the Trump campaign. They chose not to print it | AP News

At least three news outlets were leaked confidential material from inside the Donald Trump campaign, including its report vetting JD Vance as a vice presidential candidate. So far, each has refused to reveal any details about what they received.

Instead, Politico, The New York Times and The Washington Post have written about a potential hack of the campaign and described what they had in broad terms.

    ...

Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for Trump’s campaign, said over the weekend that “any media or news outlet reprinting documents or internal communications are doing the bidding of America’s enemies.”

    ...

This year, Jamieson said she believed news organizations made the right decision not to publish details of the Trump campaign material because they can’t be sure of the source.

Can you imagine if Kamala came out and said "Iran if you're listening..."

If the hackers wanted to release it, they would’ve done it themselves. Sending it anonymously to a media company is more of a whistleblower thing to me.

It's seen as more trustworthy when traditional media publish it.

The source might be Kellyanne Conway ;)

No. Maybe they would release it directly if the media shuts them out, but the info is far more impactful if you can bamboozle a supposedly legit org into being your mouthpiece. That was why intelligence people called the Hunter laptop hack misinformation - not because it wasn't true but because it was strategically released to impact the election in a certain way. Ditto the Clinton emails. Iran is doing the same on Trump.

I'm glad media is trying to be smarter now. Wish they could have been the last few elections. I imagine it will all come out in alternative media anyway and traditional media will eventually have to acknowledge it. But this isn't a healthy dynamic.

Trump invited foreign interference. They welcomed it. At best, their campaign staff were idiots used by the Russians. Many on the right cheered this on because it’s Trump over country. Many of them claimed the Democrats would do the same.

They were wrong then and are still wrong today. Democrats, on the other hand, cooperated with the FBI (as previous campaigns, both Republican and Democratic, did when faced with foreign powers passing on potentially hacked material).

Trump is the exception. There isn’t any 'both-sides-ism' here. One party today has and would still work with the enemy to win an election, while the other would never cross that line.

Iranian hackers attempted to interest Biden staffers with stolen Trump campaign info, FBI says - CBS News

Iranian hackers sought to interest President Biden's campaign in information stolen from the rival campaign of former President Donald Trump, sending unsolicited emails to people connected to the Democratic president in an effort to interfere in the 2024 election, the FBI and other federal agencies said Wednesday.

There's no evidence that any of the recipients responded, officials said, preventing the hacked information from surfacing in the final months of the closely contested election.

The hackers sent emails in late June and early July to people who were associated with Mr. Biden's campaign before he dropped out. The emails "contained an excerpt taken from stolen, non-public material from former President Trump's campaign as text in the emails," according to a U.S. government statement.

In late July, officials with the FBI, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the Department of Homeland Security said that Tehran had started a campaign that was working to weaken Trump's candidacy, while Russia was attempting to do the opposite.

Last month, sources told CBS News that the FBI was investigating whether Iranian hackers had targeted people associated with both the Trump and Biden-Harris campaigns.

In response to the revelation, Harris campaign spokesperson Morgan Finkelstein told CBS News in a statement Wednesday evening that "we're not aware of any material being sent directly to the campaign," adding that "a few individuals were targeted on their personal emails with what looked like a spam or phishing attempt."

Finkelstein said the campaign has "cooperated with the appropriate law enforcement authorities since we were made aware that individuals associated with the then-Biden campaign were among the intended victims of this foreign influence operation."

Yesterday, Trump said that Harris should resign in disgrace over allegations that Iran hacked him and attempted to provide information to her campaign. (The FBI reported that Iran hacked Trump’s campaign and tried to pass the information to Biden’s campaign, as well as to several media outlets.) Trump falsely implied that Harris’s campaign was guilty of the same behavior he engaged in—working with a U.S. adversary to interfere in an election. He’s right about one thing: if you solicit or collaborate with a foreign power hostile to the U.S. to meddle in an election, you should resign in disgrace. That’s exactly what he did when he asked Russia to hack Clinton and release the material.

And let’s not forget: after it became widely known that Trump had asked Russia to interfere in our election and that his campaign had contacted the Russian government, the GOP in Congress blocked a bill that would have required campaigns to report foreign election assistance.

Senate Republicans blocked legislation on Thursday that would force campaigns to notify the Federal Election Commission and the FBI about attempts by foreign nationals to influence an election.
