Just got a personal demo in an Apple Store (was only there to get my daughter's iPad replaced) and spontaneously bought one.

Anyone tried it/has one? Best apps?

I was told that the NBA has a deal with them and there are going to be some immersive camera perspectives...the demo was insanely cool.

    https://techcrunch.com/2024/07/18/apple-immersive-video-new-content-vision-pro/

"This app will get even better as the NBA starts to roll out Immersive video, giving users a courtside view and more. As NBA Commissioner Adam Silver told The Hollywood Reporter, “It can take you anywhere on the floor. It can give you the perspective of a player, it can bring you places that you could never otherwise go and absorb it.” "

No, but thought about it. Just not sold on its utility. What sold you on it?

The immersive demos. They were just awesome. Like most people, I have been in 3D IMAX theaters. I have also been in the Sphere. But the demos were just mind-blowing.

The Apple Store sales guy was genuinely enthusiastic and knowledgable and I think the whole demo took a good 45 minutes or so (I was still in the Apple Store about 15 minutes after it was meant to close).

Apparently, the Vision Pro itself, but also the iPhone 15/16 can record spatial photos/video (https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/record-spatial-videos-for-apple-vision-pro-iph6e3a6d4fe/ios), and it makes it feel like you are in the room with the people. I love the idea of creating such memories while my kids are still small (I take tons of photos and videos of them, but the spatial video demo was another level).

Also, the demos of soccer and basketball and a lady balancing on a rope over a canyon were so impressive. Like sitting courtside at an NBA game. And apparently, that will be rolled out to League Pass subscribers. Just awesome.

Only thing is, I wear glasses, and while they had a machine that measured my prescription strength and they had demo lenses, you need a current prescription to buy the right lenses. My glasses are from Germany. Tomorrow, I will go see an optometrist, get a prescription and then I can order the right lenses online. So I can't really use it yet (I have the device here at home already).

P.S.: One other use case I loved to hear about was to be able to use it on plane journeys. In the last 2 years, I spent 50 days (1,200 hours) butt in seat on planes (a lot of my posting here happens on these journeys, when I am bored). I think this will beat the outdated tech on first class inflight entertainment.

Good info, especially the kids and plane part. I will watch some other stuff on YouTube. May be a good 'Christmas present' for me this year.

I really love VR and wish I had time for it. But be forewarned - once you’re in VR, time accelerates and before you know it, hours have passed.

I’ve enjoyed the Oculus Quest. That Apple Vision Pro is very nice (I think) but very expensive.(or did they lower the price?)

I completely forgot about it. My only concern would be neck pain from prolonged use. But for an airplane flight I feel like it could be game changing.

My real life goal is to be ascetic. I want to get a land line and be unreachable outside of the home.

Yes, still very expensive. I always buy the top spec and also got AppleCare, so I think all in it was something like 4.7k or whatever.

Watch the ‘movie’ on Apple. It’s not just VR, it’s AR and other things.

Utility-wise it’s recommended to take breaks every 30 minutes. I’d like to use something like this to replace my monitors so I would need a longer wear time. There are much cheaper solutions for that but all of the features taken as a whole with Apple quality think it’s a decent price.

I’m just concerned with adoption rate. The more people who have it, the more media and applications will be developed. Think about consoles that flopped with a library under 50 games. I’m looking at you, Atari 5200.

Am thinking about also getting the Oculus 3 or whatever it's called now.

But then I remembered that I had one of the previous versions and never even took it out of the package...

So I tried it out today, with the lenses in (which I hopefully won't need anymore in two weeks). There is still limited immersive content, and you can't watch that while lying down (I was hoping that would be possible), but the immersive content they have is really immersive.

I really do hope that the NBA will offer some exciting options here. Seeing Bron dunk and Curry hit a three while "sitting courtside" is pretty amazing. Also, some wildlife content (rhinos, elephants) and Alicia Keys doing a rehearsal...feels as if you're in the room with her.

There is no Netflix or Youtube app (yet), but one can use these services via the Safari browser. I'll go on Youtube and see if they have any VR or 3D content etc.

Also, it's pretty cool that you can "immerse yourself" in panoramic photos you took yourself in the past.

As usual, the integration with other Apple stuff is cool because all your favourite photos, videos etc. are right there.

Bought the Oculus. Haven't played with it for awhile.

This seems like something where we're "five years away" from being usable or must have. I might try to make cheap apps for it if it picks up.
