McCullers and Garcia. Forgot about Urquidy. I guess he got injured prior to spring training. So 2 out of 3 already done for the season and Garcia a big question.
I had zero expectation for McCullers... but I didn't expect France and Javier to go down for the full season either.
What do you do when someone has nothing to report but insists on doing so anyway? Drop the 16 ton weight of course.
Hunter meeting the team in Tampa (his home, of course) and doing things on the field is not "nothing".
Can't depend on guys coming back from TJ. Anything you get from those guys even next year should be considered a bonus.
is it worth bringing up forrest and put him in the bullpen as a reliever arm? his numbers look good as of late
I would absolutely look into it, in September. Pressley has one more year left after this year and is not getting any younger.
I think we need to be very cautious about expecting Whitley to be Pressly's replacement. That said, the best/freshest 4 arms + the big 4 ( Scott has earned his spot) need to be in the bullpen and he very well could be one. When they go to a 6 man rotation it will take one spot away. He will be out of options next year so will need to make the team out of ST and remain all season, or DFA'd. Might as well see him as much as possible if he's pitching well. If he's not hurting the chances to win, then the worst that can happen is he gives a guy like Ort or Dubin a bit of a rest so he's fresher if needed in September/October. Best thing is maybe he gets rid of that flame throwing Ferguson.
At this point there's no reason to not call him up aside from them simply thinking he's not good enough to help the team more than the current guys. I'm pretty sure he'll be out of options next season either way, so he's gonna have to stay on the MLB roster all year if we're keeping him beyond this season. The only logic one could apply aside from that is we think he's gonna fail or be meh at the MLB level and we hope he can ride a strong AAA finish to some trade value in the offseason.
Ort, King, and Dubin have pitched very well and for now I would be surprised if Whitley would outperform them. They’re not calling up Whitley to replace Scott, Abreu, Pressly, Hader, or Ferguson. And there are several guys in AAA throwing well who might be better options than Whitley (Contreras, Hernandez, Junk, Martinez). Knock wood, but the Astros have very enviable RP depth right now. And they could get Murfee and Graveman back next month. By this point Whitley should have some trade value. They should hang on to him to see what they can get this offseason.
The 31st is just about 2 weeks away...what would your roster machinations be? You can add 1 pitcher and 1 position player to the active roster. Keep in mind that anyone on the 40-man or 60-day IL is postseason eligible.
2 more spots on the roster come up once September 1 comes... which is only 3 weeks away... I imagine we will see Whitley then. I am thinking the team is trying to avoid burning option years so that knocks out King. Ferguson is the non-closer lefty. Dubin is the only long guy with Seth in AAA. Ort has been a high performer. No one is demoting Scott, Abreu, Pressly, Hader. In the words of Steve Kerr... it's a math problem.
I believe that Ferguson may have a shorter leash than you. Agreed. If they stay healthy, they have earned their spot in the playoff run.
