JV on a ~$14M/1yr deal with big IP incentives and even a vesting 2nd3rd year options would be a fine deal, but only if he ends the season healthy.
Scherzer, Kershaw, Morton are going to be similar comps. But seems like there will be mutual interest… can’t account for whatever the Dodgers or Yankees or Orioles or Tigers would want to do this off-season (only other realistic landing spots that he’d likely consider), and that will largely depend on how their post-seasons or off-seasons go as well.
Good to see the Astros got the Silver Boot again. Was pretty frustrated after blowing game one of this series.
JV already screwed the Astros once by leaving for a "better" opportunity. The Mets money wasn't more considering state income tax and cost of living between NYC and Houston. Astros lost prospects to re-attain him. At this point, JV has barely pitched 50% of games during his Astros tenure due to all his injuries. He should agree to team friendly deal, and the Astros should only make an offer if he finishes the season strong and healthy. The majority of his major career success has happened in Houston. I also didn't like the fact he was barely in the dugout '20 and '21 while he was still cashing checks.
It seems if we can just win the division that's really the only way. If we can win the division it will likely mean no wild card for Seattle.
The issue was always the years. No one is giving Verlander more than a 1+1 deal moving forward. Mets were just being stupid and they learned their lesson.
Verlander seems to be a FA after this season. So he must didn't meet whatever requirement for year 3. Astros shouldn't have had a problem with that because the assumption would be was healthy and performing. Regardless, the cost of living along with state income tax would've equaled more net income in Houston (2 years) vs NYC (3 years). Kate just wanted a more glamorous city -- and it might cost JV's 300. The prospects to re-attain him could've helped sustain another bat the Astros' run production, or maybe those bats could've stayed with Houston and helped.
The Mets gave him a stupid contract. He would have been stupid to turn it down. He got his cake and got to eat it when he came back to Houston in the trade. Everything turns up roses for Mr. Upton.
He's basically been a part of the Astros organization now going on 8 years. If theres mutual interest (largely based on whether he can still pitch effectively), they'll probably work something out. Will be similar to how Clemens was on year to year deals.
He hurt his 300-win cake and the team. If he believes it was worth it, good for him. Kate can celebrate too.
