Arraez has 1 year of control left where he’ll make somewhere between $12M and $16M in arbitration. He doesn’t have much defensive value and he doesn’t hit for power. He doesn’t walk or steal bases. His one skill (getting on base by making contact) is super elite, but outside of that he’s not very good. He is on pace for 5 HR this season and about 1 fwar. He has very little surplus value and the Padres need to move money. Profar is a free agent so they will need a LF.
The Padres laugh at that. Chas is a non-tender candidate going into his 2nd year of arbitration after this season. The Astros have not brought Whitley back up since he has been healthy and dealing. The Padres know that and it will reduce his value. He also is out of options so is a likely DFA candidate sometime next year Maybe they consider Melton AND Chas and Whitley.
OK. Maybe it was an exaggeration but my point was that Chas likely has no value and time and the Astros handling of him have taken any value Whitley had. So they are both essentially throw ins after the primary trade chip is decided.
What's Melton's prospect status? I know some sites have him ranked #1, but it seems that there are holes in his swing. Not saying I would trade him for one year of this dude.
Seems like they’ve reached **** or get off the pot status with him. He was/is untouchable…. Yet he still hasn’t figured out how to hit. I’m sure other teams know this as well.
McCormick’s value is diminished, no doubt. But he will make <$5M next year. For a guy with three 2+ fwar seasons on his resume who is still in his prime age range, there’s enough upside there that he isn’t a non-tender candidate. If he has another bad year, he would likely be non-tendered next offseason. Reality is that neither McCormick nor Arraez is all that valuable.
And yet he continues rising in the rankings. Currently up to #66 in mlbpipeline. The questions are: Is Jake Meyers the CF for the next 3 years? Can Pedro Leon be a regular CF or has he regressed to a corner? Will Matthews settle in as a CF, or stay in the infield? Does anyone from the lower levels have realistic chance to be a regular CF by 2027-28 (when Meyers control is over)? The more "yesses" the safer it is to trade Melton.
Yeah we aren’t getting anything for Chas at this point. It’s not even his numbers…it’s how bad he’s consistently looked swinging at balls a foot inside one pitch and then a foot outside the next. He doesn’t even look remotely close to contributing.
I agree you can’t non tender him, but like I asked in the GDT yesterday, what do you do with him? Does anyone here feel comfortable letting him get another shot next year without addressing LF in the off season? Do we just take whatever we can get for him? It’s not going to be much.
There's also the possibility that they trade for a CF or sign one in FA. If Leon isn't the CF of the future, then I like Matthews as the best internal option. Bottom line is there's a lot that can happen in the next 3 years.
Probably the answer. If we could get a lefty that hits RHP well to platoon with Chas, I think that’s the best bet. If somehow Chas starts hitting again, he can take some ABs from Meyers in CF.
McCormicks defense likely saves him. If he is limited to LF, I think Whitcomb moving to the OF makes him expendable. As it is, I think he will have a very short leash next year, and may spend some time in AAA if he doesn't recover some of his offensive production.
I hope they go out and trade for a young KJerstad type everyday LF and turn Chas into an everyday 4th OF. This way you could live with Meyers no hitting/throwing azz for another year. Maybe one of the guys in the minors could beat him out. I would give up Framber if he isn't going to re-sign and Pressly for guys like Mountcastle and Kjerstad. Do I think this will happen? Not a chance.
Melton, Ullola, Fleury, Jaworski, and Leon to CHW for Luis Robert Jr. Probably an overpay considering Robert's injury risk and salary, but will need to outbid other teams and prospects are just prospects. He adds a true middle of the lineup bat who plays up the middle. Ronel Blanco, Blubaugh, Bastidas, and Hamilton to MIA for Jesus Lazardo and Jake Burger. Capitalize on Blanco's good season Mia gets a pre-arb SP to offset Luzardo and save $$$. Meyers to CLE for Ben Lively Lively is a JAG but looks like good depth, Meyers is expendable but Cleveland needs a CF as they are playing an infielder there this year. 2025 Altuve 2b Tucker rf Alvarez dh Robert cf Diaz c Burger 1b/3b Whitcomb lf Dezenzo 3b/1b Pena ss Bench: Caratini, Dubon, McCormick, Singleton Rotation: Framber, Brown, Luzardo, Arrighetti, McCullers, Garcia, Lively, France, Gusto. Bullpen: Hader, Abreu, Pressly, Scott, Ort, King, Murfee, Martinez, Whitley, Sousa, Ortega
Not giving up that much for Lazardo and Burger. I'm holding onto Blubaugh. I like the 1st trade, but would try to hold onto Fleury. Maybe add somebody else. That guy has potential to be really good. I guess what I'm saying is Blubaugh, Brito and Fluery are the pitchers I like most in the Stros org, so I want to hold onto them.
Didn't like him before and after watching him in the last series definitely wouldn't overpay. I'd give him $1 for his services as the 9th man though.
