Best post-war movies: First Blood Taxi Driver The Deer Hunter Born on the Fourth of July Judgement at Nuremberg
Back to WWII Come and See Inglorious Basterds Downfall The Thin Red Line Patton Not great, but stuff I loved as a kid: Victory Guns of Navarone Kelly's Heroes Tora Tora Tora Dirty Dozen
Recently, I enjoyed Dunkirk and 1917 … both more than Midway (2019) and Imitation Game deserves a mention.
The Longest Day is a Memorial Day regular. Not a great action movie, but the cast was insane. It kind of started a 60's trend of putting together huge ensemble cast prestige War Movies, carried over in my next selection... I love A Bridge Too Far - the Anthony Hopkins bridge scene is one of my all-time favorites: I watched The Big Red One about a million times on HBO when I was young. I have a very soft spot for it in my heart. Maybe objectively it isn't amazing, but Lee Marvin is Lee Marvin, and Luke Skywalker isn't Luke Skywalker.
I’m glad they keep making themmm errr oh wait They don’t because people don’t watch them anymore and they’ve really slowed it down ; )
After watching Band of Brothers about 5 times, I can't take "The Longest Day" and some other D-Day-Plus movies quite so seriously.
yes, and its definitely in my top 5. my question is does band of brothers count? its a 10 hour miniseries so maybe its not fair to put it up against stand-alone films tropic thunder patton apocalypse now saving private ryan lawrence of arabia best war documnetary: they shall not grow old - peter jackson restored a bunch of WWI footage. its incredible. EDIT: ken burns civil war too. best war movie that takes place in texas: the alamo - the one with billy bob thornton.
I feel like it is as much of one as something like Patton. They are both bio-pics set during wars in which the wars play a large role.
I would love someone to treat Hemingway's "For Whom The Bell Tolls" as it should be, the Spanish Civil War is something nobody knows or cares about, it's made for a multi-hour miniseries.
Lots of good selections here and agree with many of them. Here is my list. 1. Apocalypse Now 2. Dr Strangelove 3. Full Metal Jacket 4. Glory 5. Das Boot. Some ones that are up there too. Saving Private Ryan We Were Soldiers Flags of Iwo Jima Bridge over the River Kwai Master and Commander Far Side of the World
Agreed. That would be an amazing miniseries. Pulling from characters from all over the world who head there to fight. Feels like a real life Rogue One ensemble
I still have not seen that but want to. The original is another one of those would give honorable mention to.
