I had that thought. The thing about the Gulf countries is that they want our money and investment so they'll never do anything that truly risks that. It's the same way Dubai attracts foreigners and Qatar gets the World Cup: religious police states with glitter.

The GOP sure weren't afraid of having a ticket with 2 bigots on it. They needed to fill that ticket up to mirror the morals of their base.

The racist felon pedo and the couch humping bigot 2024! Make America embarrassed again.

I honestly would be content with any of the names be thrown up but Shapiro is my favorite choice right now. He has Rizz.

I'm fine with having a Jew but I would prefer a Jew who recognizes that Israel is perpetrating a genocide with American help. There are many Jews who do see that but Shapiro doesn't seem to be one of them. Picking him seems to signal that Harris will continue Biden's morally gray support for how Israel chooses to defend itself.

If I were on Trump’s team, I wouldn’t want Harris choosing Shapiro. I would be promoting narratives to ensure that.

Who in the Biden administration, including Harris, has expressed the view that Israel is committing genocide?

If Shapiro wasn’t Jewish, his views relating to Israel would probably not even be an issue. It really seems to me like he’s being singled out due to his ethnicity.

Realistically, a Harris administration will not significantly alter Middle East policy, including US military support for Israel.

Shapiro served in the IDF. No way dems risk the jihadi vote in Michigan staying home by making him VP.

Idk. Dude called me an anti-semite. I don't think I'm singling him out if I take offense.

None of the possible picks were going to take a progressive stance on Gaza. But most of the others seem to have taken a more nuanced position at least, from what I've seen. The VP won't set policy or anything. It's just unfortunate that someone can call me an anti-semite and still ask for my vote.

I honestly think Pete would be a great VP, but like someone else said, all are better than Vance.

From what I have read, Shapiro's positions and opinions include:
    • Advocates for a two-state solution
    • Upholds the peaceful right to protest
    • Criticizes campus protesters who disrupt Jewish students
    • Criticizes pro-Palestinian demonstrators who target Jewish-owned businesses
    • Condemns Islamophobia
    • Condemns Benjamin Netanyahu's mishandling of the war, calling him one of the worst leaders in the world
    • ...

    (March 2024)

Shapiro: I meet with our Arab American, Muslim American neighbors; Palestinian Christians; others who were really impacted by this. I’ve met with them privately in my office in the Capitol. I've spoken to them over the phone. I understand the pain that they feel.

We’ve lost around 30,000 people in Gaza. Of course, this all started because 1,200 Israelis were murdered by Hamas, a designated terrorist group, in an unprovoked attack on a sovereign nation. We can’t forget the genesis of this, but we also can’t ignore the death and the destruction that’s occurred in Gaza. For those who are peacefully protesting, I support their right to do that and I’ll defend that, and I want to make sure they feel heard. And I think in Pennsylvania, they do feel heard.

Shapiro: We need a solution that ends the war. We need every hostage to be returned home. We need Hamas to no longer be in power, whether that’s because they're defeated or put into exile. And there needs to be a meaningful conversation toward a two-state solution. And ideally, that conversation would happen with an Israeli government that is not led by [Prime Minister] Benjamin Netanyahu, who has been a destructive force for Israel over time.

Has been very critical of the college protests, saying "some" have used them to engage in antisemitic abuse but painting with a very broad brush to denounce the entire student protest movement. Biden had done the same. They do it again in saying if I complain about Shapiro then I'm being antisemitic there. I have to vote for these guys because of Trump but I'll say it isn't the most winsome strategy for earning my vote.

From what I’ve seen all do the potential VP picks have essentially the same position on Israel / Gaza. What sets Shapiro apart is that he is a religiously conservative Jew, has been to Israel and trained in their armed forces, and has had some harsher rhetoric towards protesters than others.

Which is bad. He has shown issues expressing empathy for people sympathetic to Palestinians. It's easy for the DNC to not to bungle this by just not picking a VP candidate who called things like the bds movement anti-semetic or called the protestors anti-semetic.

It's not that hard to find a Democrat that didn't do those things.

Sounds like a man who had to ease up on his rhetoric because he knew it won't jibe with Democrat politics.

Also the concept of Bibi "mishandling" is sick. You don't mishandle ethnic cleansings. This isn't a "oopsie".

And another issue with his framing is his rhetoric implies that before Oct 7th, Palestinians weren't oppressed.

It's not about the war, it's about the college protests. Quick googling, I can find quotes from all the candidates (except Walz so far) that more or less denounce the college protests, which I suppose is unsurprising because they were actively reinforcing the messaging coming from President Biden. I'm unhappy with the entire party over that tbh. Maybe it is splitting hairs, but what sets Shapiro apart is that he was more forceful and broad than others in his condemnation. At one point he compared college protests to a kkk rally. He offered caveats and all but I can hear the signal in the noise. Guys like Kelly also criticized the protests but so far as I've seen have stuck to criticizing the bad actors instead of denying all legitimacy to the protests themselves.

Democrats were doing a snow job this spring. They will probably have to do another in the fall. They wanted to court voters in the middle by supporting Israel and they got attacked from the left for their moral failure. But to give any ground there would give Trump a political opportunity in the middle, so they instead just called the progressive wing antisemitic. It will probably work for this election. But I doubt the resentment will be forgotten later.

It is unsurprising that progressives don't want Shapiro given what he has said, nevermind who he is. If he had said college students were mostly peaceful and our young people are advocating for justice, no one would be saying 'oh but we can't trust him because he's Jewish.'

Is it really that hard for the Democrat candidate to avoid chosing a former IDF soldier as their running mate?

Like it's that hard to find a politician in America that didn't serve in the IDF?
