20 minutes or so off the bench as the primary backup PG is plenty of play time for his rookie season.
Game 1: Lakers Game 2: 1/5 (3PM/3PA)...6 Rebs....7 asts...2 TO....22 pts....16 (+/-) Game 3: 0/2 (3PM/3PA)...4 Rebs....2 asts...4 TO....15 pts... -14 (+/-) Game 4: 0/5 (3PM/3PA)...5 Rebs....7 asts...9 TO....20 pts... -9 (+/-) [11 pts and 6 fouls by halftime] I don't count the Lakers, nobody was guarding Bronny, Lakers played deep drop coverage. Teams started hedging the Reed PnR after this game. Kuhse got past Reed the whole game. Reed would strip him from behind. Picked his pocket, bounced the ball off his leg. Kuhse made the mistake of not protecting the ball after blowing by Reed. NBA players will gather as they pass him, protect the ball with two hands like a running back running through traffic. Know where their kick outs are, lob threats, floater/bank shot ready. At the moment I have Reed posting (in NBA games) : 11 points..3 Rebs...5 asts...5 TO's....5 Fouls... -11 (+/-) Teams we start their PG and then take him out after 5 minutes, only to bring him back to roast Reed when Reed comes in. I really don't see Reed getting significant minutes with that non existing defense. He will have to learn to put a hand or elbow on guards driving or they will continue to blow by him and get him in foul trouble. Put our bigs in foul trouble because of no defense at point of attack. Reed does get steals at mid court with quick hands as points guards are calling out plays. NBA point guards will learn to protect the ball at mid court while Reed is close. I stated 11 pts..... -11 (+/-) when we drafted him *Subject to change as I watch him in preseason
Holiday will start the year getting 10-15 mins a game. Sheppard will only get garbage time if he is on the roster. I believe he starts in RGV. I love his shooting, but a lot of his issues got exposed against Nix and the defensive deployments. He will largely be a spot up shooter if he gets any playing time early.
Keep hope alive that they'll sabotage his development like that I guess... but it's IMO very unlikely to be the case. Holiday is insurance, sure, but when you get the best player in the draft, you don't waste their time in the G League. Also when you are trying to win, you don't play an inferior guy like Holiday when you have someone A LOT better. We're not talking about a super raw player that needs to learn to shoot like Amen. There's nothing Sheppard could learn from the G League.
RGV is used to get players into a rhythm using the same offensive and defensive sets that the Rockets deployed. That’s why Cam spent so much time there. Why would I want to keep hope alive? Somehow you must be confusing me with someone else and that’s an unnecessary attack with someone just trying to have a reasonable conversation. I want Sheppard to be great from the very start, but am being realistic about how Ime and the FO will proceed with his development. Giving rookies that much of a role the first quarter or so of the season is not a formula for the playoffs and would be inconsistent with how Ime handled the young players last year.
Amen Thompson was in the rotation from day 1 until he got injured. He spent two whole games in the g league only to get back to speed after injury. Reed Sheppard is going to be better than Amen last year. Cam was not ready, he’s nowhere close to Reed.
If you watched Summer League, it was clear the two things Sheppard needed most was better conditioning and better teammates....I don't see how the G League helps either. He's much better off staying with the team, continuing to work with the trainers and getting some chemistry with the bench unit... many of which will be the future starters alongside Sheppard. The G League just isn't helpful to a player like Sheppard the way it potentially could be for super raw guys like Amen or Cam who needed to learn basketball basics... Amen with shooting a basketball, Cam with learning basic team concepts. It also isn't helpful to the team to have one of the most skilled guys in the roster wasting time in the G League instead of helping the team win games.
Sheppard was exposed in the SL whether you want to believe it or not. If they insist on playing him at PG then he will be playing for the opposing team every time. The less he has the ball in his hands the better. Reed is not ready to be an NBA PG. They need to put him in the spot up shooters role if they expect him to have any success in his rookie season.
Am i?? No because I can't trust the organization to do the right thing. They had no business picking Reed in the 1st place. So to think they will all of a sudden do right would be foolish.
Amen was amazing on defense from the very start and had much more position flexibility. Reed right now is awful at defense and can be bulled on offense. If he gets significant minutes early on I will be surprised, because of the minute crunch they have by not trading Brooks and re-signing Holiday. I hope you’re right and Reed plays so well that he earns a role right away. Pre-season will show us whether having better teammates will elevate his game. If so, then bring him on far as I’m concerned. I personally want to see all the youngsters get a ton of minutes, even if it means we miss the playoffs. I just think the FO will proceed with vets getting preference as long as we are staying in the race. If they felt differently Brooks would be gone and Holiday would not have been signed. I think they will mistakenly start Brooks unless they get a really good trade for him. If that is the case, Amen will get more play at PG at the expense of Sheppard’s proposed minutes. They will give preference to giving Amen and Tari minutes over Sheppard.
Yeah it is lmao, absolutely hilarious that people still call them out for that complete ****ing weirdness.
Lol, the only thing that was exposed was his poor conditioning heading into Summer League and that he was on a team full of awful players once Cam was too exhausted to help him out. If anything, Cam was the one who got "exposed" because he ran out of gas WAY before Sheppard did.... do you think Cam needs to start the season in the G League too? Let's face it, you were pretty hilariously wrong about him leading up to the draft can only wish they looked as good in Summer League as Sheppard did. Don't let your bad basketball analysis cause you to hold a grudge against Sheppard.... he's likely one of the faces of the franchise going forward.
Its always someone else's fault. Theres always an excuse for poor Reed. Ime is going to be the worst coach ever when poor Reed isn't getting PT. Even though the team is winning. I can see it now. Truthfully I don't have to say anything else about Reed because his play has and will prove my point. The exposure will be worse in the league and yall are going to be crying and complaining all season. You're right though. He will be one of the faces of the franchise one day as a spot up shooter. He'll be one of the faces in the background.
Lol, what "excuses"? He was the best performing rookie in Summer League.... Also what's truly hilarious about your hot take is that you just got done saying that Cam would play good minutes this season.... despite the fact that he was not only outplayed by Sheppard but also had to tap out and quit sooner because his conditioning was even worse than Sheppard's.... I give you an E for effort, but you're really embarrassing yourself here.... again.
