I would not mind Houston signing Canha to a one year deal this offseason and having Singleton and Cabbage compete to see whether Canha is the everyday LF or 1B. Options at 1B this offseason are going to be extremely limited. 2B Altuve 3B TBD DH Alvarez RF Tucker C Diaz LF/1B Canha 1B/LF Singleton/Cabbage SS Pena CF Meyers Bench: Dubon, Caratini, McCormick, Cabbage/Singleton
Yeah, I’ve been one of the few that haven’t flamed Dana for the Kikuchi trade but this part I just don’t understand. Even Josh Bell would have been an upgrade, and yes, I realize he’s been bad too so I will probably get flamed for this. He’s been hot lately though and was a huge piece last year for the Marlins after being traded there. There’s a zero chance Singleton hits for an OPS above .800 over the next 50 games like Bell did last year. And worse case scenario, even him sucking is probably better than Singleton.
He had a down half-year his first season with San Diego. Hopefully he's the type that needs a little time to settle into his new teams because we 4 more years of him.
The problem is that, offensively, they are all 3 the same basic player - RH, power over hit with lots of K in the game and speed. There are few if any matchup differences. Defensively, Meyers' range and reactions/instincts in CF are head and shoulders above either. Chas has lost some range but is aggressive and catches balls that many OFs give up on. Leon has an exceptional arm (while the other 2 are very below average) but is less natural fielding fly balls. Until Tucker is back all 3 should play everyday. But it's looking like Leon does not offer enough differences from the other 2 to get into the lineup. He's the rookie so he sits.
Chas hasn’t lost range at 29 years old. What a stupid thing to say. I know you want to point to baseball savant metrics but those change when you don’t play CF anymore. Chas doesn't have as much ground to cover in the corner outfield positions. You keep trying to scorch and salt anything Chas related. If he goes 0-2 in the 9 hole next game, you will be clamoring for Leon to take his place.
his approach at the plate with men on base has not been great this season. far too often is impersonating Carlos Correa's approach when CC was here in houston. stare at the 1st hittable strike one. swing wildly out of the zone on 2nd pitch. then usually pop out or strike out looking. although it was encouraging to see Yordan hit the ball where Michael Freaking A Taylor tracked down and took a hit from Yordan. the team needs him to get on for August because who the hell knows when Tucker is coming back. i don't see Yainer stay hot for long.
Sorry. I will continue to point to actual measured metrics above your opinions. In 2022 Chas' range averaged 36.4 ft which added 2.6% to his catch probably. In 2024 it's 35.1 feet and 1.2% Meyers is 38.2 feet and 3.5% and both have improved each of the 4 years he has been in MLB. And before you say I hate Chas, both those numbers are very good and he is an excellent fielder.
Those stats change when you go to a corner OF spot. He doesn't have to cover as much range. Those comparisons are trash. and I’m not saying he’s a better defender than Jake. I just know he didn’t lose range or speed in 6 months from 28 to 29 years old.
The CF position is more demanding and requires more effort and distance to cover. That’s why you cannot compare dWAR between a CF and a corner outfielder like you tried earlier this season. You think those numbers indicate that Chas has lost a step in the last 6 months? I guarantee you he is just as fast as he was when last season ended. Did you see him beat that routine grounder the other day? He hasn’t lost a step. He’s 29 and weighs the same. His hammy may have hampered him for a bit this season but he’s back to normal now. please don’t respond with telling me that running to first is different than running in the outfield.
Chas lower body injuries have affected him this year especially since he tried to pay through it... still above average, but it is noticeable that he's half a step slower.
Ok. Whatever dude. You guarantee all you want. I'll look at the measurables. Of course CF is the more demanding position and therefore is worth more dWAR than a corner spot. What that has to do with this conversation is beyond me. I'm just glad I learned today that being in a corner OF position limits your reaction time, route running, and burst ( the 3 elements that make up range) when a fly ball is hit to you so it's impossible to have as much range as when you play CF.
Wasn’t noticeable the other day when he beat that routine grounder out. The hammy may have slowed him for a bit but his speed is back.
I do have to say that when I looked at baseball savant to respond here, Chas' fielding/running metrics are better than the last time I looked a few weeks ago.
probably because he is over the hammy finally. Still, baseball savant is not the final answer for everything. You put way too much stock into that. Simply playing the game at the pony league level or earlier teaches you that faster reaction time and more effort are required in CF than in left or right. Baseball savant is fun and can be used as a tool but it’s definitely not the argument settler that you think it is.
I never played pro ball and I certainly wasn't good enough to even dream of that But when I did play I certainly reacted just as fast and tried just as hard, ran just as fast no matter what position I was playing. That was probably why I never made varsity. I didn't realize I should run and react slower if I was in a corner instead of center. Well, that lesson is about 38 years too late.
