The olympics were so big, i remember they were making decathletes US heroes: Dan and Dave. I think 2008-2012 was the last year for the generational uber marketable olympic athletes Usain Bolt and Phelps
Dan and Dave...one of them didn't even make the Olympics, iirc eta: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_&_Dave Bolt and Phelps are from some other-world, not even remotely human. Simone Biles too, except I know she's from Houston, mostly, maybe.
Even though she didn’t get the gold congratulations to Prisca Awiti Alcaraz for winning the first medal ever for Mexican Judo! In the meantime while the US team members who have competed have won a match each have lost before the medal rounds.
Olympians like Simone Biles, Suni Lee and Stephen Nedorcisk (the Clark Kent Gymnast) are marketable it’s that media including sports is a wider and more diverse market now than it was. I also think the Olympics has spread itself too far with too many sports.
Yes. They’ve done much better than I or anyone I’ve ever coached as done. They’ve put in a ton of work and much respect. As an American Judoka though I would like to see the US do better in Judo. It’s like everyone on the Astros is a major league ballplayer while the best I could do is little league. I’m still disappointed when the Astros lose to the A’s.
I was going to post this in the annoyance thread but since this is particularly about the Olympics I’m posting it here. I almost never watch the Today show but I’ve always been bothered by their “coverage” of the Olympics. I get they’re playing to a demographic and I’m not the target market but I find it not just annoying but almost offensive at times. First is the ridiculous amounts of jingoism. I get it this is a US network and US audience but the amount of celebration and out right cheering comes off as off putting especially in sports that the US dominates. It really is the sense of punching down. Worse than that though is how Hoda Kotb acts around the US women’s gymnasts. These are very tough athletes who have rigorously trained and relentlessly focused yet she treats them like children. The way she fawns over them and plays up inanities like “how cute they look” or what they are eating before a match is not just annoying it’s infantilizing. She comes off, I’m sure deliberately, as the aunt at the family gathering asking the niece who just graduated summa c*m laude in astrophysics about their fashion choices.
Snoop Dog Getting lessons from Phelps in the hotel pool was good tv. But I was most impressed with how Phelps in one swing looked like he was gliding on the water while snoop dog was drowning.
The highlights for me: 1. The Nerd Olympian hitting the pommel Horse for the Bronze. 2. The Womens Rugby miracle for the Bronze. 3. Leon Marchand Lapping the field.
Twitter took down the tweet you posted for copyright here’s some awesome angles from nbcsports, which I trust won’t get flagged…
