It's considered terrible but the organization seem to churn out stars and good everyday players year after year and at a higher rate than a lot of the league.
Do you know that for a fact? Or does it just feel that way? Most teams in the hunt don’t try and see if all prospects stick (including the Astros). I would also figure rebuilding teams will see more prospects promoted, get developed, and eventually get traded at a higher rate than most teams in contention… because the teams in contention have locked in guys at a lot of spots. I’m also curious about your use of “stars” and “year after year” in this description…. Which year are we using as a starting point? All that being said, the Astros do have a strong development team…. Meaning they do get minor leaguers ready for the big leagues and transition that immense transition with a good system…. Regardless of whether said players have the tools, pedigree, or born-with talent that elevates a lot of minor league systems in the rankings.
I wouldn’t say “scrubs”, but Houston does not have any prospects that most other teams would consider elite.
Ranking seem to favor the higher ceiling type systems… vs. the higher floor type systems. I would think most winning teams (and the “cardinals way” that Crane long envisioned for his team) would favor the latter.
Supposedly the Astros sent him tape right away showing him some of the things the Astros pitching coaches and advanced scout noticed. For all I know he could go 1-6 the rest of the way, but I am impressed by the amount of time and work the Astros put into deciding who to trade for and how they can help them improve. He has a top 5 fastball in baseball and hopefully they maximize it.
ESPN thinks it’s a lose lose trade based on just grades lol https://www.espn.com/mlb/insider/st...trade-deadline-grades-report-cards-every-deal
Multiple people with knowledge of Houston’s deadline plans said Kikuchi sat atop the club’s target list, so it’s understandable why Brown acted fast to acquire him. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5670908/2024/07/30/astros-trade-deadline-yusei-kikuchi-price/
Just got home from a concert and long work day and this thread helped work through the emotions of seeing this trade. Shock, denial, anger, confusion, nihilism. Good work crew.
Weeeellll...I almost went with "Dammit, I told you to throw strikes, I didn't tell you to hit the bats with them!"
Also remember...different teams value different prospects differently (crazy, I know!) They're not working off of yall's public prospect lists.
