Though reports throughout Tuesday linked the Astros to Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Yandy Diaz, people familiar with both teams' plans said Houston's overtures were never serious. League sources said the Astros had far more interest in Isaac Paredes, whom Tampa eventually traded to the Chicago Cubs. Diaz did not get moved on Tuesday.

You know the Astros are in PR recovery mode when they give air time to Cal McNair hours after the MLB trade deadline. Not like we needed affirmation but there it is.

They're celebrating Andre Johnson hall of fame induction. It makes sense for the CEO of the team to be on the broadcast knowing that.

Picture this: It’s Game 1 of the ALCS. The Astros went the distance in the ALDS just to get there, and they had to use Framber Valdezor Ronel Blanco in relief just to get there, so the rotation is a little jumbled. Now starting Game 1, with the pennant on the line, is Yusei Kikuchi.

Does this fit? Are Astros fans feeling OK about this? Honestly, they might in a couple months. Kikuchi has always been a bat-misser, and he’s made every start this year. The Astros have a knack for unlocking effectiveness from their pitching additions.

But we’re not grading these deals based on hypothetical scenarios from the future. They gave up a lot to get a starter who hasn’t prevented runs this year, and they didn’t get a first baseman. Only one place to put ‘em. — GB”

The Astros may be the biggest trade deadline loser in all of MLB.

To put it in poker terms.

You know you don't have the cards to win a showdown.

You put half your chips in (Kikuchi deal) calling a bet (Arozerana deal).

Then you just check instead of betting.

Another bet (Turner deal) and eventhough you are pot committed and no longer have enough chips for it to matter - you fold.

So you committed half your chips without the conviction to put the rest in and now your chances of winning are very diminished.

Once they traded for Kikuchi they were committed to get a bat- regardless of the cost. Otherwise you wasted those chips (Bloss, Loperfido, and Wagnwr)

Brown is better in a scout role. Not a GM one.

It also didn’t help him running his mouth to the world. (Just like Daryl Morey used to do) about what their plans were.

With Joey Loperfido on the roster we were 37-22 (15 games above .500). True we had J.Abreu on the roster otherwise but the Loperfido effect was real. We've since lost 2 games after trading him.

Let that sink in a bit.

It's more than that Brown did not make a move to replace him.

    I thought we’d make it in the 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s, and 20s so take me with a grain of salt :)

Brown said the team had discussions about pursuing an addition to its lineup but that “nothing materialized” ahead of the 5 p.m. deadline.

“I think our deadline was very strong,” Brown said Tuesday afternoon. “We feel very confident that we stabilized the rotation. We added to the back half of the pen, where we rode those guys real hard early in the season. So we feel very confident that we did what we needed to do at this deadline.”

Brown reiterated that the Astros found asking prices to be high for pitching help. Houston parted with a minor league pitcher, Kelly Austin, and international bonus pool money on Tuesday for Ferguson, a lefty who posted a 5.13 ERA over 42 appearances with the Yankees this season.

“We took a hit yesterday, but we felt like the hit was needed to get what we needed in the starting rotation,” Brown said. “And we felt like it was a fair deal according to the market.”

Brown on Tuesday voiced optimism that Tucker can return “just as effective as he was before the injury.”

First base seemed a logical position for Houston to seek an upgrade, and according to reports, it showed interest in the Rays’ Isaac Paredes and Yandy Diaz. Paredes was traded, to the Cubs, while Diaz was not. Brown said he felt Jon Singleton “took charge of the runway” given him at first base and said a platoon of Singleton and a right-handed hitter “would probably be the way to go” at first base down the stretch.

“I think the way we’ve been playing since June 1, we’ve been getting after it, and the guys have showed the grit that we needed to show,” Brown said. “So we wanted to make sure that we would get some reinforcements, and I think that we really added some reinforcements.”

Entirely possible it doesn’t work out this year. I still feel like I’ve been living someone else’s life over the last 8 years or so as a baseball fan. We likely won’t miss a meal ;)

Apparently Yankees had a deal for Flaherty but backed out after a medical review.
