You say this like it’s not a big deal. If he makes one extra 3 every 3 games that’s an extra 1 ppg. A one point increase to net rating is worth around 3 extra wins.
What is more crazy? A. Jalen makes one more 3 every 3 games B. Amen becomes a 25% 3pt shooter C. Alpi extends his range past 10 feet D. Jabari becomes a serviceable rim defender E. Cam improves court vision F. Tari jumps several core players and becomes part of the Big 3
A is the most unlikely. Jalen Green is one of the worst shooters in the entire league, going from being a career 33% 3 point shooter to 38% on 7+ 3's a game is significantly more difficult than literally any player in the entire league becoming a 25% 3 point shooter, especially a low volume guy like Amen. In fact, B is likely to happen, C probably happens, D is unlikely but possible, E is likely to happen, F is dependent on health. So yeah, only A and D are even unlikely with A being almost certainly not going to happen.
C already happened (11% of Alpi's shots last season were from 11-16 feet and he made 51.3% of them). For B, I'd bet Amen's true talent level as a shooter is already close to that level--I wouldn't read too much into his 3P% in such a small sample size. He's a bad shooter right now, but I don't believe he's "will keep shooting 14%" bad. Most guys who shoot 69% from the FT line can hit 25% of their threes if they take enough of them, he just doesn't take many because he's a smart player and knows it's an inefficient shot for him right now.
@Verbal Christ is the biggest demagogue here. Of course A. is very feasible, but on how many extra shots? Green can easily make an extra 3pointer, if he took 10 extra shots. For your math to work, he needs to make one xtra triple on the same number of shots. Well, that is easily craziest!
If you approached this in good faith you'd understand he means converting one of his misses to makes every three games. .
It’s definitely what he means and he knows it. But that’s not what he wrote, that’s why I say he’s demagogue. If you compare for example, rookie year Green to 3rd year Green he has made 0.2 3pters per game more, or one every 5 games. So getting another 0.33 is not out of the question… However, attempts have gone up even more, and he’s not mentioning it!
Jabari doesn’t have to though. Besides they have different games. Jabari just has to be good at what he does, which is: Three pointers Pull up jumper from 15 ft Elbows Dribble drive from Elbows Low-mid post
I like Lauri but I just can't really imagine a world in which Ime Udoka wants his starting front court to be Alperen Sengun and Lauri Markkanen.
73% of Senguns shots come from 0-10 feet. If he can ramp up that 11% mid range shot to 25% it would open up the offense dramatically not only for him, but for everyone around him as well. Thats without even taking into consideration that if he added a 3pt shot it would make him a top 10 player in the league. If Amen Thompson can reach 25-33% 3pt shooting he will be a perennial all star/DPOY type that is also in talks for being one of the best players in the NBA. Im not so sure I can just thumb my nose at 69% FTs and expect a leap in shooting outside of 15 feet. Hard to hit a ceiling if you cant hit a shot. You first need to show competency before you can work on consistency.
Yeah, I think that's the key sticking point along with the injuries and the general problems with trading with Danny Ainge. Lauri would make our offense a lot better but it's hard to see Ime being happy with that starting frontcourt defensively. At best the overall defense would be average.
