As it stands now, Ramsey (10th) signed for 70,000 underslot which covers Verdugo and Twine. Ryan Smith signed for 10,000 under and Parker Smith signed for 90,000 under. So the Astros have 100,000 plus their 5% to use for Powell, Forcucci and anyone left after the 10th round (McKary?). Not a lot in my opinion, so McKary most likely goes unsigned Of course this does not account for the contingency bonus which I have no clue about
3 big unknowns: Forcucci was in the mix for the first round before his surgery. Theres logic for him requiring significantly over slot to him signing well below slot and everything in between. Powell was headed to a big time school. Those programs now can pay their players. We know Powell will require over slot, but we don’t really have a good idea of how much overslot until he signs. Teams used to be able to go 5% over their total bonus pool without penalty. I am not sure if that is still the case under the most recent CBA. I will be very very surprised if they sign their 20th rounder.
Yikes! I get that he’s a good talent, but dude JUST had Tommy John surgery. If this signing costs them Powell, I’ll be disappointed. Obviously, there’s no way they sign McGary now.
I don't get how Forcucci had enough leverage to ask for overslot. He could return to college for his senior year, but ... will he be able to pitch a full season? ... will he struggle to start his next season? As a drafted senior, he could not reasonably threaten to not sign.
I'd be shocked if the Stros drafted Powell where they did without a pre-arranged range of dollars. Now that there's a shortened draft, hard caps on draft money, and slot values, that's pretty much par for the course. ...unless Powell simply changed his mind, which teenagers have been known to do. There's not a ton of NIL money in college baseball, but that would depend on the school and I have no idea where he was thinking about attending.
He was committed to Oklahoma State. They have some NIL but I doubt they are offering any single baseball players more than a few hundred grand.
I have nothing, not a thing, against Luhnow. He changed Houston sports. We, the Astros of the worst 3-year span ever, the Astros of never winning a title, are the blueprint of baseball. Every team in baseball is trying to mimic us, aside from the dodgers and Yankees, because they can’t. He created a Dynasty, that’s what media and fans dream of.
Beware of the Oklahoma State curse. Tyler Buffett (OSU pitcher) and Alex Ullola (committed to OSU) were the only top 10 round picks the Astros have failed to sign since the Aiken debacle.
It could be that some team wanted to give him an underslot deal earlier in the round, and the Astros had to promise him extra to float him to the end of the round. There were about 5 college pitchers that signed for 700-850K, maybe Forcucci was offered one of those slots, but the Astros saw a chance to buy a first round talent. I'm a little surprised too.
Dodgers might do a better job in the minors, at least ranking wise. The Dodgers did not have the tanking high picks that the Astros had.
Okie State equals huge oil guy...T.Boone Pickens....but he's dead Not sure about the family and how much they care about the school
It was actually a different billionaire that led to Buffett's decision not to sign. Ullola didn't sign with rumors of off-the-field issue. I strongly suspect that Powell will sign, I just saw the coincidence.
