But why are the Dodgers DFAing him and looking for more SP at the deadline?

    Smells fishy to me.

He hasn't thrown 100 pitches all year
6 of 18 starts of over 5 ip
    6 of 18 starts under 5 ip
Has walked 2+ in 7 of last 8 starts.

If a team goes to a 6 man rotation it reduces the bullpen by a man and starters need to go deeper.

    Pass.

Didn't realize he was that bad in 2023 also... are we just testing how much the hitting coaches can do...? I also don't believe he is 33. Being an all-star as a rookie suggests that his prime was back then...

    Love this !!!

Murfee is a huge leverage option.

Look at his MLB numbers and Savant page.

Huge for Brown to get him for nothing.

This is 2nd year in a row that the SP depth has been tested and come up short.

I hope however many SP they decide they need next year, they add 3 more.

I'm not exactly sure how much quality you can expect from your 8th and 9th starters on the depth chart.

No player worth a s**t is gonna agree to a minor league deal, and you would need 2 or 3 of them waiting in the minors to avoid what we've ran in to. 4 of your 6 projected opening day starters having long term injuries in the first 1/3 of the season isn't really plannable.

We traded for Verlander to eat some innings and avoid this situation, he got hurt too.

This this this. Other than having utterly stacked AA/AAA pitching staffs or having some kind of evaluation/development superpower, there’s no way to account for losing the number of projected SP innings Houston has had to deal with. When most pitching staffs were set in the offseason, Houston had 9 guys who appeared viable: Framber, Brown, JV, Javier, Urquidy, France, Bielak, Garcia (who was projected to return in late June), and McCullers (who was projected back by the all-star break). That did not include Blanco (who Dana brown converted to SP in the spring) or Arrighetti (who was expected to need more time in AAA). Since February they have gone thru ALL 11 of those guys plus Henley and Bloss. Theres just no way to go into planning a roster thinking “yea we need that 14th starting pitcher to be a guy we can count on”.

I remember the days when folks complained about signing Odorrizzi when Framber's injury was less severe than expected

Considering we have an entire world series winning rotation on the disabled list and still control our own destiny to the playoffs says a lot about our talent development.

When Tucker left the game 6/3/24 the Astros were 27-34 and 7 games behind the Mariners.

This team came together but it's out of juice and needs a boost.

Yep. We probably performed over our heads keeping afloat (thriving really) without him but we badly need 2 bats (plus him back) to be what we want to be. I get it about the arms. I’d almost say bats are more important. sign Paxton for free to eat some innings, hope Jav comes back and go get Robert, Arozarena and Paredes or something crazy like the.

Exactly, these guys need some help, one more turn through the rotation before the trade deadline. Hopefully Dana waiting until the deadline doesn't cost the team a couple of games and they miss the playoffs by a game or two.

I would add Paxton and trade for a starter.

BTW, Espada needs to know that Martinez has shot his load.

This team has the arms. They just need to be healthy, and it's impossible to KNOW enough of the top 10 guys will be.

If healthy, Framber WILL be 1 or 2 in the post season.

If Brown doesn't regress between now and October he will be in the rotation.

We know J.V. is unlikely to crap the bed so if healthy will also be there.

Blanco is more suited for starting and could be paired with McCullers or Garcia to cover 5-6 innings in game 4.

    It's all about health.

I really like the bullpen if Murfee, Ort, Whitley, King and/or others can show some consistency and Scott doesn't regress.

What I don't see is a hitter outside of the 4 usual suspects and possibly Diaz who can step up to that 120+ level from the 95-110 they are and have been.

Sure. Which is why I’d prioritize bats over arms. But I’d sign Paxton because it’s virtually free to bridge the gap the next 2 or 3 weeks until JV is back. And for insurance if we have another injury beyond that.

It takes both GM’s to get something done sooner. I doubt it is brown holding out that is the problem.
