Black Lives Matter slams Democrats for 'anointing' Kamala Harris without primary vote
by JACKSON WALKER | The National Desk
    Tue, July 23rd 2024 at 3:42 PM

WASHINGTON (TND) — Civil rights activist group Black Lives Matter (BLM) on Tuesday called for Democrats to host a virtual primary to determine who should receive the party’s nomination ahead of the Democratic National Convention.

Harris earned enough delegates Monday to win the Democratic nomination, according to the Associated Press. The publication stopped short of calling her the presumptive nominee, citing the potential for changes leading up to the convention.

The BLM press release noted, however, Democrats have alienated their voter base by not holding a primary to officially nominate Harris.

“Black Lives Matter demands that the Democratic National Committee (DNC) immediately host an informal, virtual snap primary across the country prior to the DNC convention in August. We call for the Rules Committee to create a process that allows for public participation in the nomination process, not just a nomination by party delegates.”

While the group noted “Joe Biden wasn’t our preferred candidate,” it pointed to the party’s “troubling” decisions to avoid giving its voters a voice, such as refusing to host debates, pushing out non-Biden candidates and having “bullied” Biden out of the race.

“Now, Democratic Party elites and billionaire donors are attempting to manipulate Black voters by anointing Kamala Harris and an unknown vice president as the new Democratic ticket without a primary vote by the public,” BLM wrote. “This blatant disregard for democratic principles is unacceptable.”

Harris has already picked up the endorsements of many Democratic leaders, including Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. The news comes as President Joe Biden announced he will address the nation about his decision not to seek reelection.

The reality is that the primaries have already come and gone, so there is really nothing that can be done about that. Whatever the hell they are proposing isn't going to work, so what makes the most sense is to nominate Kamala who is Biden's running mate. Not a perfect solution, I agree that it is "undemocratic" but it is what it is.

There's a reason you put a vp on the ticket.

This concern trolling and belly aching is pretty tired.

Back in 2020 at the height of BLM, I remember reading someone saying the Dems were using BLM to advance their goal but when they're aren't needed anymore then they'll be discarded. I think this is the beginning of that. BLM isn't needed anymore.

Biden didn't step down as president, nor do the people choose the VP. You think Kamala would have been the choice after the 2024 primaries had Biden stepped down last year, like he should have?

It's actually extremely and reflectively democratic. By a huge majority (86% from polling), Democrats wanted Biden to leave the presidential race, and he complied. Independents similarly supported Biden leaving (at 79%). They are doing this knowing that it's impossible to repeat a new primary. In development, we call these types of actions that react to changing realities 'agile.' The Democrats (DNC, leaders, grassroots) are being agile and tuned in to the populace, with Biden selflessly abiding and listening to them. As democratic as it gets, really.

So, there won't be any virtual primaries, but there will be a virtual roll call, the same one that was planned months ago. It's an identical process, but now that Biden has withdrawn and released all his pledged delegates, it's whoever wins the delegate count, and Harris is favored to do so.

PS. Imagine a political world where judges, governors, even POTUS are responsive to the populace and leave office when a significant percentage of people ask them to do so. Most of us should want that, but it can't happen because there aren't that many Joe Bidens in the world.

This is the typical circle jerk self-aggrandizement liberal mentality. The kind where people like Harris talks to their constituents like children or how Jill Biden talks to the president.

Moderates and the right have repeatedly stated Biden is not fit to run for office, however the left continue to insist he is perfectly fine ... because that is what the media told them to believe.
Then when the media told them Biden is not fit (and only because the donors said no more $$$), they turn it around and pretend they listen to the people and adjust to voter sentiment.

This line of attack is another dud that only plays in conservative circles.

You can apologize for the Democrats all you want. Trump support Bitcoin, SpaceX and AI development. I have zero interest in all the nonsense the Democrat party has to offer. My time frame is greater than a political party's 6 month race to stay in power. The GOP is all but dead and I eagerly look forward to the corrupt power structure found in the Democrat party to die also. d

Good times are ahead except for the blind party supporters.

The primary role of the VP is to take over if the President can't run. At least she was on the ticket. Not perfect. But hardly "undemocratic"

If the assassin had succeeded, the GOP would be in a similar position and JD Vance would likely be their nominee.

I'm gonna love hearing Republicans talk on behalf of black people
like they are concerned or care about black people all of a sudden

Don't think Vance was the VP nominee yet, and even if he was, I'm pretty sure Trump's pledged delegates are free to vote for any candidate at the convention (though I haven't read up on the RNC rules).

    This is purely academic.

When RFK was assassinated in June 1968, there were no clear rules on how to handle the delegates he had already won. The DNC changed the rules after that to avoid such confusing and chaotic situations in the future. The new rules state that if a candidate or nominee dies or withdraws before the convention, their delegates become unpledged and can vote for a replacement candidate of their choice. In this case, the "virtual roll call" or the convention itself effectively replaces the primaries. If the candidate dies or withdraws after the convention, the party committee has the power to name a replacement.

The virtual roll call to formally vote for the Democratic nominee is scheduled for two weeks from now, on 8/7. It must be done before the convention to be eligible for the Ohio ballot. (Ohio recently changed its law to allow the nominee more time, but legal challenges by the RNC are a possibility, so the DNC will stick to the 8/7 date)
