Agree about Frank's later Dune novels not measuring up to the first three. As for his son's novels co-written with Kevin J. Anderson, I gave them another try, but it sits on a shelf today, unfinished. I need to put it in my box meant for the next trip to Half-Price Books. I do most of my reading these days on a Kindle, with the occasional visit to Book People here in Austin for a hardcover or trade paperback. It's a terrific independent book store, one of the best in the country. Like Waterloo Records, a remnant of earlier Austin days that's still with us. As for Kevin Anderson, he's an author who seems to specialize in writing novels based on highly successful earlier novels (Herbert's Dune the obvious example), films (Star Wars, of course), and also TV series (like X-Files). He's pretty good at his craft and has found a lucrative niche, which is not easy to do. @Xerobull described him as Brian Herbert's "ghost writer" for the Dune novels, and he's likely close to being on target with that, in my opinion.
All the other Dune attemps through the years failed. The agreement was Villeneuve would get 2 1/2 hours and 165 million to make his version. The compromise was a Part I. If it made a profit, the studio would grant him Part II. It turned out very successful even before the world premiere. Part I was completed in 2020 but waited a year because of the Covid nonsense to ensure it would get the best presentation possible. It was made for theature release, not for people's crappy soundbars and mediocre walmart tvs. Part I was successful enough to get a Part III which will cover book 2. If the sisterhood is successful, expect a full 3 trilogy series like Starwars along with several spinoffs.
ngl, if this was on Netflix I'd already have bad vibes and wait for the tinny sounding review bombers to have at it, but with HBO running it, def give it a shot.
From late October to mid-November there are a bunch of season premieres of series that I plan on watching. It's almost an overload.
Anyone else watch? Started slow but picked up. Only 6 episodes so not too much time to invest if you end up hating it. It could turn into a nice 5 to 6 seasons if they have a progressive storyline and don't run the current characters/story into the ground.
I made it through the first episode and I couldn't get into it (really love the movies). The Catholic Space Nun part of Dune is by far my least favorite part of the whole story/universe, so I'm sure that didn't help at all. I'll try it again someday soon, especially before the next movie comes out and especially since you say it picks up after a bit.
Actually think started good and then took into HBO cookie cutter plot theatrics and shock value bs 3/10 and I’m usually pretty generous dune itself was a perfect 2 films
The catholic space nuns are good in the movies in limited amounts as an intriguing mystery but an entire series dedicated to them is a bit much. I’ve found it hard to stay awake during pretty much every episode. Also Dune with no Hans Zimmer or Denis V isn’t really the same thing even if it’s still miles better than old campy sci fi channel content from the Dune world. Glad it’s getting a second season but I hope the catholic nuns are a much less central plot point to follow. Kind of like the Jedi with Star Wars. When everyone is a Jedi with force powers it gets real old real fast. Except the catholic nuns can’t have samurai laser sword fights.
