Oswald was a sharpshooter, the second-highest ranking after expert.

I mean there is only 3 ranks for Marine rifle range scores. Marksman, sharpshooter and expert and the first one, marksman is something people often joke about. "you got the pizza box prize". The medal is shaped like a pizza box. From my recollection almost 50% who went through the rifle range got at least sharpshooter.

I'm pretty sure you and I do not know the standard procedure. When someone is suspicious, but only that with no sign of violence, do you actually remove him from the grounds? That sounds like a violation of someone's rights, so probably not. You track him, though, to be sure it's nothing more. The question that I have is when you lose track of him, which is what happened, is it serious enough to cancel the event or delay it? It's a judgment call, and it probably depends on how suspicious they were of him. Hindsight is 20/20, but in the moment, it's not always that straightforward. The bigger failure, it seems to me, is the blind spot—not guarding the building that had a good view of the podium and was within rifle shot.

It seems that way. The family, especially the father, since he called the cops hours before the shooting to report him missing, probably knew something or was wary of something.

He was a below average shot, which is why he was supported by other shooters. Big risk to add people to the operation... which speaks to his poor quality shooting.

His extremism is the same type of extremism of the Columbine shooters. Accelerationists who felt like their lives were not grand enough and wanted to make an impact on the planet.

You can't place traditional political lines onto this shooter.

If a group of people heard that Employee A Target didn't honor a 2 for one deal, and were mad about it, decided to go to Target one day to plot out how to force their way inside, then came back armed the next day assaulted the Target security guards to force their way inside, chanted they were going to hang Employee A, and also told people that had they found Employees A& B they would have killed them, , it is reasonable to beleive they took affirmative steps to execute the murder of those Employees.

It isn't unfounded to suggest the murder was a possibility.

It seems so. He's just a boy, lost and confused. (Not a gun thread, but more reason why kids shouldn't have access to guns without adult presence and supervision.)

But what if the people chanting they'd do those things were actually Target execs in disguise? And that their goal was to discredit the group of people's real complaint which was Target raising their prices too high and introducing "deals" to cover that up

That would be a fantasy within this imagined fantasy. Just asit's a fantasy that J6 was instigated by FBI/Antifa. In the Target scenario, let's presume people aren't so gullible to believe Target execs would do that without deminstrable proof.

I agree, Trump's choice of personnel was terrible. But the opposite can also be true. It's been proven shown there is no way to get fired in the Biden administration (other than for stealing luggage).

Apparently the shooter might have been looking into shooting EITHER candidate? Is it finally boomer hunting season?!

good video and article on the NYT site:

    https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/17/us/politics/secret-service-trump-shooting.html

At 6:03 p.m. Mr. Trump appeared, waving to the cheering crowd. Six minutes later, with Trump now energetically speaking onstage, witnesses noticed Mr. Crooks crawling into position on the roof. They alerted local officers, who patrolled the area outside the Secret Service’s perimeter.

It was two minutes before the shooting.

Onstage, Mr. Trump continued speaking, seemingly unaware.

But around him, the Secret Service contingent frantically began to respond, shifting its focus from scanning the crowd to scanning the area north of the security perimeter. The sprawling warehouse complex just to the north — the blind spot — was now everyone’s focus.

On a barn directly behind Mr. Trump, a Secret Service counter-sniper team quickly clambered from one side of the peaked roofs to the other. Now, they pointed their rifles at the warehouse about 450 feet to Mr. Trump’s right.

Mr. Crooks was on the warehouse roof, but it is unclear if the Secret Service counter-snipers could see him. A New York Times visual analysis showed that the view for these snipers was likely blocked by the gentle peak of the warehouse’s roof.

Mr. Crooks was still hidden, low-crawling up the other side.

On the ground, officers from the small Butler Township Police Department had been assigned to direct traffic near the warehouse. According to a social media post from Butler Township Commissioner Edward Natali, at least two of the officers left their traffic posts to help look for the suspicious person.

Two officers went to the warehouse, and one officer boosted the other up, so that his head was above the roofline. He and Mr. Crooks saw each other. Mr. Crooks “turned his firearm,” Mr. Natali wrote, but the officer could not fire back: He was holding onto the roof with both hands.

The officer fell backward and was injured, Mr. Natali wrote.

Mr. Crooks reached the peak of the warehouse roof, high enough to see over the top. A witness on the ground yelled: “He’s on the roof! He’s got a gun!”

Then time was up. Mr. Crooks fired his rifle eight times, according to a Times analysis of audio from the scene. His first shot appeared to graze Mr. Trump, bloodying his right ear. Two other rallygoers were injured, and a 50-year-old retired firefighter, Corey Comperatore, was killed.

Afterward, a Secret Service sniper on the south barn killed him with one shot. A local police officer in another part of the area also fired at him, but it was unclear if his bullet struck Mr. Crooks, according to the Butler County district attorney.

Allowing Trump to go onstage put all of the rally goers in harms way.

I know Trump supporters get a bad rap around here but they were just innocent bystanders.

So they allowed the damn shooter to have access to that rooftop with a rifle to pump out a few rounds but won’t let me have my water going through airport security?

They could have easily pulled Trump away to safety when the shooter was discovered on the rooftop, plenty of time to do it. Planned hit
