I tend to agree with you, I have thought this week there were many signs that Democrats were throwing in the towel and simply accepting Biden's probable loss in November. But today there are renewed calls for him to step down (from Congressman Shifty no less) and there is the admission he made that he would step down if a doctor advised him of a medical condition that would justify his stepping down. So it could be that there is still some chance he could drop out yet

People could be calling for him to drop out as a political maneuver, to be on record as calling for him to drop out if he loses even knowing that he will run anyway.

yep. but I think there's some real effort there behind the scenes trying to get him to turn the reins over to Harris. That would reinvigorate the Democratic base in a big way

Doubling down on Harris would be nice if she had some pull in swing states.

That's for the 538 Morey geeks to unravel but it's doubtful a Californian like her would be relatable.

With how late it is in the process is the only option left where Biden officially retires?

some are speculating that delaying the virtual primary votes is a move to continue to build momentum on calls for him to step aside

2024 election live updates: Schumer, Jeffries pushed to delay Biden nomination vote
Schumer, Jeffries pushed party to delay official Biden nomination vote: Sources

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries pushed the party to delay its nominating process, multiple sources tell ABC News.

This comes after Schumer met privately with President Biden on Saturday in Rehoboth, Delaware. Following the meeting, Schumer only described it as a "good meeting."

This is the biggest indication so far that Schumer is keeping an open mind about Biden's future.

Schumer and Jeffries spoke and both agreed to make the push, according to the sources.

I don't think the people wanting him to drop out want Harris. They want Newsom, Buttigieg, Whitmer, Shapiro, etc. No one (with a brain) thinks Kamala Harris is the favorite to be President in 2025.

If he were straight yea he'd have a better shot than anyone else as it is Buttigieg is a no go.

I don't think she'd win, but for the lefty libby progressive AOC-loving branch of the party, Harris would reinvigorate that subset of Democrats--which at this point, is the base. Honestly, I don't think any Democrat has much of a chance to beat Trump in the now-less-than 16 weeks remaining until Election Day.

I still think anyone but Biden would have a shot of winning. Surviving an assassination attempt did not make Trump's policies or personality any less toxic to the people who voted against him in 2020 and 2022 in the midterms. It solidified Republican excitement to vote for him, but I'd be shocked if it swung anyone his way.

Dropping Biden would reinvigorate Democratic and anti-Trump voters. The states everyone wants - Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania - all have Democratic governors and senators (except for Ron Johnson who barely won in 2022) that have run strongly against the modern GOP.

I maintain that Gretchen Whitmer would win those three states and the election.

    This presumes a smooth transition.

The whole thing could be a fiasco. There's a lot of different factions in the Democratic coalition.

that may be, but I think the general Democratic Party shitshow has swung a fair number of people his way . . . and swapping candidates at this point isn't going to necessarily swing them back. But swapping candidates is pretty much the only hope I'd say.

The polling on this is very interesting. Even with everything that has gone wrong for the Biden campaign it hasn’t plummeted as would be expected. That’s created the problem that is keeping Biden from dropping out but given that a lot of polling shows many democrats want someone else they this isn’t a pro- Biden support but Anti-Trump. That would mean that anyone the Democrats run would likely start out with that support

I too feel that Whitmer would be the best choice but I get the feeling she is less likely than Harris if Biden were to drop out.

It could be but the one factor that unites Democrats is wanting to beat Trump.

I also doubt this. Democratic infighting isn't an endorsement of Republican policies or Trump.

If anything, I think the polling shows Democratic voters are desperate for anyone but Biden. Senate races in the must-win states show he is trailing Democratic candidates by a large margin. If your hypothesis were true I'd expect that to also show in the Senate polling. To my knowledge it doesn't.
