    Depends on the pitcher -

In the past a lot of pitchers would rather pitch once for two innings, but stylistically the game was very different. Pitchers did not do everything possible to maximize velocity, so going an extra inning was more expected and not as big a deal. Back then, you blew out your arm and your career was likely done..... now these pitchers are programmed to throw 20 pitchers at 99% effort and that is it. I know a lot of people liked to rag on Hader, but not many closers go two innings - and certainly not often, and if they do, their effectiveness is greatly impacted.

If you are talking about Garcia, he is used to starting so in the short term he can likely go two innings - also he doesn't really maximize his velocity as a starter, because he needs control and because of movement. Personally - even with Garcia, I would get him ready to pitch one inning - because in the playoffs, we will have other options - want to piece together a 6-9 inning of guys.

Thanks for the response. However, the question wasn't answered. The question was generally speaking.

Another question regarding taxing/effectiveness... in a 4th game in 4 day scenario, would you rather have?...

    a) a pitcher who pitched Game 1 and Game 2 (or 3) for ONE inning each
    or
    b) a pitcher who pitched TWO innings in Game 1 (or 2)

I agree some pitchers are more capable than others pitching ONE inning vs TWO, but the Astros have multiple guys who are capable of multi, yet haven't used it effectively enough IMO. I believe multi-innings is *less* taxing on an arm and is more effective overall. If a guy throws 2 GP he had to warmup *twice* instead once for two innings. This also allows another reliver to potentially not pitch at all (an extra day rest). I don't believe Espada has maximized what he has at his disposal. We have the Big 3 pitching with 4-run leads, and they're all on pace to pitch 80+ games --- THAT is more taxing on an arm and decreases effectiveness.

My personal opinion? one inning in two games for most relievers.

Someone like Martinez? If he has a clean inning, I don't mind him coming out for another

What would you consider mortgaging the farm?

I would give up 5 top 10 prospects and 3-4 lotto tickets to fill the needs to try to win another WS or two.

Why? Because I think Dana can add 3-4 top notch prospects each year.

Example, I would give up Blubaugh, Ullola, Whitcomb, Leon and Melton for Finnegan and Winker. I dont know if this is a fair deal or not but I would give up even more if needed.

Cole, Knorr, Wagner, Gordon, Tamarez for Bassett.

I think they were all doing old-school ‘roids. I doubt they were even tested, because they used Creed as a diversionary tactic when the mlb showed up. All of them dancing and junk grabbing each other to Creed. Disgusting.

    The Texas Roidgers.

yes, that’s how they won (I’m reading between the lines on what Altuve suggested).

Framber should start first game out of the break -- he's our biggest horse (and prob our best pitcher over to course of 162) and hasn't pitched since the 10th.

Blanco should be avoided until at least Sunday. Give the man some rest. The entire staff needs extra rest.

Astros need to trade for a low-4.00 ERA innings-eater ASAP. They have two stretches of 18 and 16 consecutive games in the 2nd half.

Espada needs to utilize Martinez and Scott better -- they should be multi-inning in 70% of their appearances.

Maybe JV will awake from his coma before September.

I would burn Bloss and Arrighetti early in the rotation, because if/when Garcia and Verlander come back, they will be sent down and can rest then. Brown and Blanco are the 2 guys whose innings need to be closely managed.

I wouldn’t throw Arrigjetti and Bloss vs Seattle

Yes still a lot of baseball left to play, but these head to head matchups are extra important

Not a terrible idea.. although I'd prefer our best pitchers facing Seattle. Maybe a unseen guy like Bloss can be effective though.

Only the team knows what's really going on with Verlander. Tucker probably broke a bone in his leg, but let's tell the public only a 15-day is necessary.

I would hate to lose any prospects for pitching, but the amount of injuries is incredible -- and most of the rotation is likely set for doom beyond 130 innings. The leverage guys are set for 80 GP, 80 !!!. The entire situation is like a volcano about to erupt, notoriously.

    Against Seattle

    Brown
    Framber
    Blanco

Pitch your best against your main competition.

Dana needs to hurry up and get a deal done, even if it means giving up a little more talent than he wants too.

Trading for a solid starter like Flaherty and I believe JV will be back sometime in the next month will help alleviate most of these worries.

He probably fractured something in his leg. That usually means 6 to 8 weeks. Then it will probably take him a couple of weeks to get back into the swing of things.

Not a bad rotation. Hopefully no crazy Framber. Gotta try to get back to winning series consistently. Let's pray.
