Agree with all of this--Clingan was a good pick for Portland. I'm 50/50 on who will have the better career between him and Castle. I still like Clingan a lot more than Edey by the way. I am not convinced Edey can stay on the court defensively. Greg Monroe was out of the league at age 28, Boban has never averaged over 12mpg, and Christian Wood is Christian Wood. Extremely high risk factor of Edey being that type of guy who is just too big of a negative on the defensive end to play significant minutes even if he scores 20ppg on decent efficiency. I think Clingan will be good defensively and at least decent (Steven Adams, Jonas Valanciunas) on offense.
Everything you said is valid, but I will point out that Edey went to probably the best place that he could have. Even if he gets beat off the dribble, the Grizzlies have JJJ there to help out. That will be a big benefit for him.
Seems like it's strategically omitted- by Hater Central, no less - that he did get 5 blocks, which is why he's on the court to begin with.
As usual your view is way off. Edey is a great defender and it would help if you watched a game or two of his. Blocks shots and tough to shoot over. Much better than Clingan overall, because offense counts in the NBA.
5 blocks are negated by 5 fouls and shooting 1/8. Cost his team more pts than he saved. He did grab 13 rebs though which is excellent. still, guys who can reb and block but cant score arent worth a lotto pick could have just signed Orlando Robinson.
Edey is so big and massive at 7'5 he becomes a defensive presence just by existing kinda like Pau Gasol. The difference between him and Boban is Boban is so slow, Edey has the speed and actually beat Clingan on drills in the draft combine.
I don't see it when I compare the game footage of Edey and Clingan though. Probably because Edey's defensive footwork/instincts are pretty poor, while Clingan's are solid.
Damn, I wanted Clingan. Don't need the ball but still gets you a double double and crooked number block shots!
Outside shooting, we were bad shooting offensively. Defensively we were fine with what we have, add in Adams to Jock and Sengun and we definitely didn't need another center.
Agree This team can already be a top 5 defensive team without adding another stud defender. This team needs more shooters if it wants to be a top ten offense.
Since, they nearly made the Play-In with a depleted roster last yr and since defense is highlighted more in the Playoffs..... I'd say defense
But they were already a top 10 defensive unit with a lot of first, second and third year players in the rotation which isn't common. Usually veteran heavy teams are the good defensive teams. This team already is a top 10 defensive team with a lot of headroom to grow mainly because of Amen barely scratching the surface of his defensive potential.
Hows that newly drafted outside shooting going for us now? That inside defensive presence would still be getting better every game like it is in Portland.
