Trump tried to overthrow the 2020 election when he lost. His supporters stormed the capital to stop the certification. He and his supporters were throwing everything against the wall to see if anything stuck so he could keep power. Despite the machismo, Trump is a loser. His inner circle are losers. His core are a bunch of losers. But rather than lose with grace, they’d rather burn the whole system down. Yes, Trump is a threat to Democracy because he is willing to break the rules to do what he wants.

Trumps MO is that he does not lose. That works in business. It doesn’t work in a democracy. His populism is not a threat to democracy. In fact, his presidency was a lot of hot noise and buffoonery but it was not world ending. His hubris both helped (operation warp speed) and harmed (sat around all of February and March until thousands were saying a day in NYC) our COVID response. The Tax cuts boosted the economy but boosted the deficit. The China tariffs led to decoupling with China but also sparked the supply chain issues that continued into COVID and became the inflation post Covid because industries realized the JIT era was over. It’s his unwillingness to accept losing. It’s his willingness to use the office to pay himself. It’s the morally bankrupt people he surrounds himself with (Banon, Cohen, Guilliani). Autocracy is great if you’re the autocrat. Trump wants to be king. Anyone with his personality type would. His most diehard, core supporters treat him like the second coming of Christ. Democracy only works because we believe it does. When that belief fades, violence breaks out and history shows it can be quite vicious.
If your goal is to create a Christian state, Trump is the vehicle to do that. Get the lifetime judges who can rule from the bench. The congress are a bunch of clowns and have no real legitimacy. So Trump becomes that vessel to push Project 2025 and ultimately transform into a nation that openly endorses a conservative take of Protestant Christianity for better or worse and where the country is run by Men of Western European heritage. It’s not Nazism but it’s the America that existed between 1876 and 1931.
