If my budget is one million dollars to buy a home, then I am not buying a home in California because that means I cannot afford to live in San Diego, San Francisco or Los Angeles. At that price point I would probably buy a home in South Carolina or possibly the Suburbs of Chicago. For one million I can get a lot of house in a place where there is less demand to live. However - if my budget is five million, I am living in Southern California or if I want a lot of land, I am buying a huge amount of land outside San Antonio and I would live like a Spanish conqueror. As far as crime is concerned - have you been to Dallas and Houston? Crime is every bit as bad there, and violent crime is actually higher than in Los Angeles or San Francisco. As long as I avoid Stockton I am fine. Most of the decisions concerning where people live are based of cost of living - and the reality is that California is a place of extremes.
So? Texas is ruled by a single party and is corrupt as hell when it comes to the political ruling class. What is the difference between Texas politicians and Illinois politicians? At least they put them in prison in Illinois. Texas has lots of land and resources that have not been tapped or over run like California. The level of leadership in Texas is pathetic.

Like everybody in San Francisco is living in a dystopian Mad Max free-for-all and has to fight off homless mutant raiders seeking to steal your guzzoline on every trip to the grocery store. Yes it is - in fact Texas has no problem giving sweetheart deals to businesses to move to Texas...... and that can be a problem....
