Boeing agrees to plead guilty to defrauding the FAA or its role in two fatal 737 Max crashes

It represents yet another black eye for the company after a series of embarrassing safety blunders, but the agreement avoids what could have been more serious consequences.

It will pay up to $487 million in fines — a fraction of the $24.8 billion that families of crash victims wanted the aircraft maker to pay.
The families of victims of two fatal crashes of the 737 Max oppose the deal, the department said.

the current Boeing Corp is the result of the corporate merger between Boeing Aircraft (BA) and McDonnel Douglas (MD) in 1997.
while the former Seattle-based BA was engineering-centric, the St. Louis-based MD was more of a corporate bureaucracy.
over time, unfortunately, the MD corporate culture has prevailed.

On a company that generated $78B in revenue. That is a lousy 0.6% of one year.

Like it or not Boeing is one of those US companies that is too big to fail. Not saying it's a good thing just that its no surprise that Boeing is able to negotiate settlements like this.

Why even offer them a plea deal in the first place? Take them to trial at the very least and get some prison sentences if found guilty.

Also a case of why insufficient regulations can be a horrible, unsafe, and even deadly thing. We often need more and not less.

“Boeing has admitted responsibility for the fatal crashes, and that its employees withheld information about the design flaw from the FAA during certification.”

Who withheld and who allow it? They should face criminal prosecution.

While its true, I'd love to see every Federal contract taken away from them. That would have more teeth than any fine.

i think you mean that Boeing, a soon-to-be-convicted felon, be barred from participating in future Government contracts,
as its existing porfolio of Gov contracts are cast in concrete

Any future contract or existing contract that can be reasonably voided. Boeing doesn't just have these safety issues, but have also been terrible at fulfilling contracts in a timely manner. They are flat out a terrible contractor, but we pay them Billions each year.

I was flying from London to Barcelona today and someone in the group ahead of me said "At least it's an Airbus." as we were about to board.

The people in charge of Boeing have permanently damaged the reputation of one of our greatest companies. I hope those assholes are prosecuted, serve real time and are penniless the rest of their lives.

My family and friends make fun of me for flying Frontier all the time and regularly bad mouth them. I just let them know at least the doors don't fall off during flight.

I'm sure it's been mentioned several times, but Downfall: The Case Against Boeing on Netflix is an excellent documentary on this
