Sure yes if it was Mao, Hitler, Stalin, Caligula, Palpatine versus Trump yes I would vote for Trump. I would vote for a toaster first over any of those.

Historical and fictional baddies though aren’t running.

I will also add I don’t think Trump did everything bad. I complimented in passing criminal justice reform, revamping NAFTA, getting the first two COVID relief packages passed and for pushing the vaccine. Those things though are far outweighed by the lack of respect for the Constitution, corruption and attempts to undermine the democratic republic system of our elections.

I’ll repeat again this would be a no brainer if the Republican nominee were Romney, McCain, Christie, Haley or any number of capable Republicans who why I might not agree with in every issue have shown they understand and respect the Constitution. The Republicans had the chance to nominate someone like that but overwhelmingly voted for Trump again.

Biden is in decline and his recent performance is terrible. I think soon he won’t be the nominee. Even if he still is though I will take that over the person that several
Of his own cabinet members said is unfit and shouldn’t be president again.

How many of those "baddies" you listed actually broke the law?

The first question anyone should ask a potential POTUS is: Are you here to serve the country or yourself? A person can operate entirely within the boundaries of the law (especially with a Supreme Court that allows it, as it has in multiple instances for what we now consider unconstitutional actions, or what should have been deemed unconstitutional - the recent absolute immunity ruling will likely fall into this category) and still pose a high risk of damaging the US. It's not just about being lawful (which, I remind everyone, can change depending on who holds power), but about doing what one believes is right for the country (which at times can have negative outcomes). When leaders prioritize their personal interests or ideologies over the country's well-being, great harm can be done to the population. When a person proceeds to concentrate power and remove the systems designed to "boot" them out if they've gone too far, that's when you get the harms done by those "baddies" you listed.

This is why it's still a very easy vote. Trump, even if elected, isn't going to last that long. But the degraded system (Democracy) might be stuck in a bad state for generations with no recourse for correction.

Its not worth discussing the times with anyone who uses partisan news sites like Politico and Fox News as their prime source of info.

There are some great podcasts out there that can discuss these issues with nuance, having opposing sides discuss topics and issues in a respectful manner.

All they really want are tax cuts and the ability to burn oil and coal regulations free.

I bet the culture crap they bellyache nonstop doesn't even affect their daily lives much. Just need it to prop up their big tent.

Because if Trump is going to win, the smart move is to vote for him. He'll go after liberals first. With Trump you have to prove your loyalty.

His past administration was known to ask people how they voted and in some cases prove it. It won't be shocking if basic benefits will require proof you are loyal to him.

    @Os Trigonum @rocketsjudoka

There is definitely not a global trend toward the right after this result and the recent result in the UK.

    https://www.npr.org/2024/07/07/nx-s1-5032011/france-elections-emmanuel-macron-marine-le-pen

French voters turned out in numbers not seen in decades to stop the far-right National Rally from taking power in the French National Assembly. Polls predicted a first-place finish for National Rally, which instead came in third in initial results as polling stations closed.

Over two-thirds of registered voters cast a ballot in Sunday’s vote, up more than 20% from the last legislative vote. French President Emmanuel Macron called the snap election after the National Rally came in first in European elections a month ago. In dissolving parliament and calling for a vote widely described as a dangerous gamble, including overseas, he said it was time for “clarity.”

Until the final day before the vote, polls suggested that French voters clearly wanted the National Rally to come in first, even though their numbers dropped and it became clear the party would likely not win an absolute majority. Still, its de facto leader, Marine Le Pen, counted to put forward her protegé, Jordan Bardella, as her candidate to be France’s next prime minister. He would have been the first far-right head of government since the Second World War.

But in the month between the dissolution and Sunday’s vote, a coalition of left-wing parties and Macron’s own Ensemble movement struck a series of local “hold your nose” deals, whereby whoever was most likely to defeat the National Rally candidate would get the full support of the other party. The deal was called the “Republican Front,” after the 1936 pact between communists, socialists and others to keep the far right out of power.

It appears to have worked again.

What happens next is unclear. While a German-style “grand coalition” between the left-wing grouping and Macron’s party is possible, so too is a technocratic government that will see France through hosting the Paris Olympics this summer.

What will almost certainly not happen is a deadlocked “cohabitation” government with Macron as president and the National Rally running the government — a situation that would have weakened France’s position in the European Union, NATO and in the international financial markets.
