How is your dog doing? I had to put down one of my dog's about 3 years ago in a very abrupt and unexpected day. I even walked her the day before, she was struggling to walk but since she was older and had arthritis it was pretty normal. In the morning I took her for a regular checkup at Banfield and to see what was up with her appetite. Got a call 2 hours later there was blood in her poop so I rushed over to see her and see what can be done, lets just say that what happened next was very difficult and traumatic for me since she had pretty much lost control of her bowel system with heavy bleeding. I didn't hesitate to tell the vet it was time but it was one of the hardest thing I have ever had to do. Honestly, if your dog is suffering I think its time. I hope she recovers! praying for you and your pet...

    Oh lord it sucks.

When they're in obvious discomfort, and there's nothing else to you can do...it's time to go out to the pasture one last time.

Lost my 15 year old Lhasa Apso yesterday. She had been fading, but not too bad. Got worse recently. She had dementia, couldn't see or hear well, and her hips were bad, making it hard for her to stand on the wood floors.

She was the last of my first two dogs I've had after moving out of my parents. I used her to propose to my wife.

It's the first time I've not had a dog since.....I think ever in my life. Feels very weird.

I know the feelings I’m still getting used to not having a cat after having mine for 17 years. It’s difficult and I’ve noticed even the house is smelling different.

It is getting easier but there are always reminders like finding some hair on furniture.

Very sorry to hear that and it really sounds like you puppy was really suffering.

It’s very hard to let go but that is the best thing you can do for your pet than have them linger on in pain.

Thanks, that's why the loss of your cat resonated with me. I did not know I was putting her down the day I woke up, she was around 12 ish years and had had many health problems including cancer we opted not to treat her for because going to the vet stressed her out greatly and the doctor at the time suggested quality of life was possibly better then going through a very invasive treatment. They gave her about 6 months but she thrived and lasted nearly 2 years, when I dropped her off at the vet I went home since it was right in the middle of covid and we couldn't wait for her check up. My plan was wait for the vet to call so she could come home, she never made it back. I did get to give her a hug goodbye but it was heart breaking. I still have the shirt I wore that day but never wore it again, just bad memories. Don't want to throw it out either. Life is tough sometimes...

    thanks Salvy

I desperately hoped that she’d get better, but she just continued to decline since yesterday…she still eats and drinks a little, but she still can not move and is in noticeable pain lying on the floor shaking…I decided that it’s time and have arranged for an at-home euthanasia tomorrow

it was the hardest phone call I’ve ever had to make…towards the end I just started crying

I've put a dog down before -- it definitely sucks as they do become a part of the family. However, when its an irreversible issue (in our dog's case, kidney failure), it's the merciful way to approach it. It should be viewed as the final act of love towards the dog -- to end the pain and suffering.

So sorry Reeko, I knows these are tough times but just know your cfans family is here for you. I'll be praying for you and of course for her as well, try to get some rest tonight and give her plenty of love before she is off to a better place tomorrow. Stay strong my brotha and cry it off, I know I cried like crazy that day and it helps. Keep us updated...

I know it’s difficult and when it actually happens it will be even more so. You’re doing the right thing.

    @Reeko

One thing that has helped has been hearing the stories of others who went through this and even on this thread with having to put down my own pet recently it's helpful. Things will be very hard for a few days and for me the second day after I had put my cat down was harder than the first. It will be stuff like getting up when you've been used to feeding your dog or take her out for a walk and then realizing she's not there anymore. It will be like finding some of her hair while you're cleaning.

Like most things in time it will get easier but it will take some time.

I love pugs. Unfortunately, I guess it is fact that most purebred dogs are more genetically inclined to health issues and this is especially bad with our flat faced friends.

Moose died at the age of 4. He was fine one day and then the next day he refused to eat and only wanted to go outside and stand in a bush. It was very offputting, and he had some sort of kidney cancer.

Mose died at age 5. He started peeing in the house, one day, which was very atypical for him and acting very lethargic. This was especially sad because the vet told us that a lot of the issues were brought on by him having a terrible diet. Parts of that were because I’ve had a bunch of young children who would feed him all sorts of crap. Now the doctor didn’t specifically say that was the reason, but y’all should be mindful that this doesn’t go on in your household. We could’ve taken a shot with a $6000 surgery to save him, but it was only about a 10% chance and so unfortunately we let him go.

now I have dogs that are half pug and half other breeds. One is 13 and going strong. I also picked up a mini pig a few years ago except these vendors lie to you when they tell you that they will stay small. So he lives out in the back area of my property now and is well over 200 lbs. If you want to see an animal, that is just insanely intelligent some of these pigs are crazy smart.

I’ve watched this mother******* spot food in the middle of a table and use his fat ass to gently tap a table leg to scoot the plate over to the edge and drop off. Mind you that he didn’t just use his sheer power to destroy the table to knock it off, but he gently tapped it over over the period of 3 to 4 minutes.

I’m sorry about what you’re going through, we are anxious about one he’s doing a lot better. He was supposed to pass last year but he took a turn when I convinced the vet to throw the kitchen sink at what may be wrong. He still has ups and downs and I worry today may be the day a lot. Our first dog died unexpectedly so we still have PTSD from it. I think when you exhaust everything (workup and treatment that isn’t too invasive or expensive)

sometimes it could be a simple infection etc

we took our Lucy for an emergency appt the other week because of a sore and her liter mate sister sensed it and was upset all day. I was a wreck Al day

    Dogs are* family

When they won't eat fresh bacon. That's been my sign that it's over.

When dogs or cats don’t eat their favorite foods is always a very big red flag.
