Isn't Dana extremely high on Melton?

I think this is a pretty good comp to what I posted about Bassitt

Surely Bassitt has a better ERA this year, but Civale is at 3.82 over his last 7 starts and was a little better performance wise than Bassitt last year

Bassitt has shown more workhorse ability throwing 200 innings last year and 181 the year before

But he also is making 19 million this year, 22 next year and 22 in 2026 while Civale is making 4.9 million this year

Giving a similar valued prospect, giving Chas to get them to take Montero's money

The other thing is, to be honest, i'm not sure how much difference there is in the Astros system from a prospect generally ranked in the 6-10 range and one ranked in the 15-20 range.

Really there are 5 prospects that I would be very surprised if we traded

Melton based on Dana demanding to keep him over Gilbert in the JV trade

Luis Baez based on huge upside

Matthews, Dana isn't going to trade his first draft pick, and the kid is looking like he may be for real

Dezenzo and this is only based on the fact that I don't think we are keeping Bregman and Dana would know that. If he really thinks there is a legit chance we keep Alez, then Dezenzo could be moved

Bloss, another of Dana's first picks and one who certainly looks like he is the real deal

Other than that, I don't think there is a lot of difference in how other organizations would value our top 20-25 guys, with some orgs liking someone generally in our 7-10 range and others liking the guy ranked 20ish

He was extremely high on Gilbert last season. Remember him talking about Gilbert winning the big league CF job I’m ST last season? Brown is full of **** when speaking publicly, and Crane is known to override GMs when they try to cling to prospects. Melton is the guy other teams are going to demand when talking about trades for impact players so he is the most likely guy to get moved imho.

Glossing over the “sure Bassitt has a better era this year” is a big stroke and really the biggest difference in our opinions. Bassitt is the far superior pitcher at this point, moreso than the difference in salary. Of course as always I could be wrong, but if Houston is offered Bassitt for Chas and Montero and a scrub prospect, they should be all over that.

Meyers has 3 more years of control.

If Meyers, Melton, and Leon were each given 140 starts in CF and 500 PAs each of the next 3 years, who has the best results?

What are the differences? (because Meyers will be on arbitration salaries while Melton and Leon would be MLB min)

And the reason I put that here, is that I don't think the Astros can or should go through the deadline w/o trading at least 1 of them.

    Deadline Needs:
    3rd Priority, Pitching
By the time the deadline arrives the Astros will be flush with pitchers.
    Valdez
    Brown
    Blanco
    Bloss
    Rehabbing currently
    Garcia
    Murray
    Available
    Gusto
    Blubaugh
    Possible
    Verlander
    Long Relievers
    Arrighetti
    McCullers
This seems like plenty to me. If anything we are likely sellers here, relieving ourselves of Montero in the pen.

    2nd Priority, A first baseman
Singleton has been an adequate first baseman. Cabbage is probably a little better. Loperfido is probably better still.
Minor league options include Whitcomb (my favorite option) and Wagner.
Going after a star here might be nice although it is certainly less than a necessity.

    1st A starting outfielder
If you are not underwhelmed with our current outfield you are just not paying attention.
    Loperfido
    Meyers
    Cabbage
    Bench McCormick
    Reserve Alvarez
Although Tuckers return is likely we are still an outfielder and a bench player short of where we need to be in the playoffs. I like Loperfido a lot but for this season I consider him to be a bench bat. Cabbage too. McCormick is a very likely trade candidate. Surprisingly I believe the outfield is our greatest area of need at the deadline this season.

Again, Civale had a terrible start but his last 7 starts he has been just as good, and he was just as good last year

If we want to say Bassitt is clearly superior at this point that's fine

But that would also be like saying Hunter brown is still who he was in May

We are currently using Arrighetti as our 4th starter and a bullpen game as our 5th starter

We are FAR from flush with pitching

If we can add a solid starting pitcher, absolutely it is

I know most wait till the deadline, but a move now for a starter who can give you 5-6 innings a night every 5 days saves quite a few innings from your pen over the next 3 weeks. Not to mention maybe a win or two which likely is huge at the end of the year

Mason miller for Bryce Mathews, Dezenzo, Whitley and whatever prospects you can get for Presley if you pay 10M or so in salary for next year- who says no?
