Sad thing is Chas is back to making hard contact but he had already fallen out of favor with Espada and is simply a platoon option in his eyes now

I would rather trade him for a higher upside high risk prospect than a back end starter. I do understand we need the innings now but hopefully Bloss is ok

He actually hadn't.... he's lost the ability to K people which was fairly critical to whenever he had success.

He's at a career low 5.8/9 right now. His sequencing and pitch types are fairly predictable as is. If he's lost the ability to miss bats, he will continue to have inconsistent appearances.

Loperfido showed yesterday why the Astros like him in the OF. But if the team doesn't get a 120+ wRC+/ops+ type everyday starter he is likely the best chance this team has at 1B for now.

They like Singleton and he has a few good qualities, but he simply isn't the player Joey is. W/ Meyers, Pena, and Dubon (rightly) playing every day, but simply unlikely to be that type of run producer over a 85+ game sample, they need more at the position.

If nothing changes in the next week, it may be time to send Chas to Sugar Land to get fixed when Tucker returns. Right now he's not part of the solution and won't have a place to play once Kyle is back.

This team has a glut of OF and it's just going to get worse.

It's a shame that prospect for prospect trades simply don't happen because a rebalance with an organization that is heavy on infield prospects would be very helpful.

The more I think about it, the more I think Matthews MUST make it at SS, 3B, or 2B and not become an OF.

If this team had a 1b, then Loperfido, Meyers, and Tucker would be a force as an everyday OF.

Cabbage and Hummel are JAGs and Chas is rapidly dropping to that level. Dubon should stick to the infield, especially with this kind if depth.

It will be interesting to see if the team decides to bring up Leon sometime this year. He's done all he can in AAA and has way more upside than those guys.

I don’t see Cabbage as a jag. He is just a small notch below Loperfido in terms of ability. He has 30/30 ceiling and if played every day over an entire season would easily be a 20/15 guy. He offers defensive versatility with above average defense at RF and LF, plus enough experience to be a backup/emergency option at CF, 1B, and 3B. A lefty power bat with speed and defensive versatility is a valuable guy even with strikeout concerns. I would love for him to be the long term 12th or 13th position player once the injury-related roster turmoil resolves, and the idea of a Leon/Cabbage platoon/competition in RF doesn’t scare me if Houston were to extend Bregman and upgrade 1B.

Agree with a lot of this

In Chas last 8 starts he has 5 extra base hits plus a sac fly that was close to a HR

I think the best thing for him at this point is a trade, not a demotion. I also think a lot of people here would be surprised at what we could get for him.

He only has just over 100 at bats this year and is a year removed from a 20/20 (in barely 400 at bats) 840+ OPS last year, making 2.8 million and doesn't reach free agency till 2027

I don't think we are too different on Cabbage. I see his ceiling as Joey Gallo with more baserunning value but fewer walks and a tick less with the glove.

But dating back to Luhnow the Astros focus on limiting Ks. It's what helped them make a big offensive jump in 17 and they are still among the best in baseball. It's also what has kept Leon down and delayed Loperfido so long.

He will likely have a solid 4-6 yr career until his versatile bench profile becomes too expensive then stick around AAA or Asia for a while.

But I don't see him as a fit for the Astros.

Looked like a great game. I'll tell you...I couldn't stay awake (workout wore my ass down) and crashed way early. When I left, Baltimore was threatening to score with two men on and zero outs. I turned it off right then thinking "oh no!". I woke up at one point and saw Jake smacked that 3 run dinger to put us up (5 - 3) and Baltimore didn't score when I turned it off. I woke up at another point and checked the score just in time to see them putting up a 7-spot. Ugh. Back to bed. Then, I checked the final score this morning and it was us winning by the three. I was going to be so pissed this morning if we gave that one up. But, it didn't come to that tg. Great offensive game, though. Amazing score.

His FIP is over 6... and has 3 blown saves... and given up runs in 3 of his last 4 outings.

Yep. He was getting by with smoke and mirrors earlier. He stopped missing bats. Without that he’s essentially worthless.

What's your prediction for the game today? You did good last night.

Did you not watch his implosion against the Giants when we staked him to a two run lead in extras?

And like Gallo and almost all other high power high K guys

He will likely go through streaks where he hits balls out all over the place for a couple of weeks, then go two weeks with 3 or 4 hits

There is definitely a place for a guy like that, but to even be a platoon player he will have to be consistent to some extent, and that’s tough for the high K guys. He is certainly young enough to cut that K rate though and become a good platoon guy or potentially more

    Yep

Just saying the guy has been very solid this year

If you want to can every reliever who goes through a stretch where they give up runs in 3 out of 5 games, you will have an empty bullpen pretty quick

Montero isn’t a stud like he is paid to be, but he certainly hasn’t been a problem this year

    Abreu
    Scott

That’s the list of Astro relievers who have not had a stretch of giving up runs in 3 out of 4 games this year

And other teams pens would be similar, or worse

Relievers who don’t have a stretch like that are more rare than Ace starters
