Do I really need to be an expert to understand that Jalen is inefficient?

What are we doing here? Why are so many on here fixated with the 3 pt shot and deem that the only variable in terms of efficiency? Do 2 pt shots not count? If you go by 2 pt% green’s numbers are better than some stars including Booker, Lillard, Kyrie, and NBA champ Tatum in their first 3 years in the league. 3 pt shot isn’t the end all be all. Look at Doncic, Fox 3 pt % their first few years. Jalen has a bag and growing let’s rejoice in that.

let me remind you that TS% is a flawed metric. Is it useful? Sure but a hollistic approach is needed to fully evaluate players. TS% needs to looked at along with other metrics and stats combined with evaluation of on court performance based on knowledge of the game.

TS% is deceptive since a player can shoot 1x 3 point shot and get 150% TS%. a player can make a shot get fouled and make their FT with 104% TS%. Or player makes shot gets fouled misses foul shot TS% 69.4% another player can miss a shot get foiled makes 2 FT TS% 113.6%.

This is just an example of flawed metrics

Turns out all of the metrics that show Jalen Green is dogshit are "flawed" according to his fluffers.

Who said all metrics? Do you even understand metrics and how some of these nba metrics are calculated? If not then don’t speak.

I can't believe we still have fans debating whether Jalen basketball is inefficient or not.

All NBA knows that except Jalen fans. Lol

That’s not the debate. There are more layers and dimensions when it comes to assessing players and you and those that agree with you oversimplify this process and make a great deal of assumptions without taking into account a lot of factors and variables in a more hollistic approach. Being too focused on a few metrics is not an accurate assessment and negligent.

For instance simply discussing efficiency in terms of 3 pt shots is not taking into account the other ways a player scores such as getting into the paint or mid range or drawing fouls etc. And again, metrics such as TS% or per 36 or OBPM are flawed and a combination of metrics, stats, and closely observing performance based on knowledge of what a player is or isn’t doing correctly is needed for a more accurate assessment before calling anyone “dogshit”. There’s much to analyze in these terms not to mention that there’s several current stars who have been worse comparatively.

We just saw Brown and Tatum win a championship but very “inefficient” from 3 in the finals. So there’s more layers to what a player does on the court to win.

So again it’s a glass half empty mentality for some fans instead of half full.

The grown ups aren't talking about TS%.

We're discussing more raw stats - Shooting percentage game by game.

    Jalen can't have

    12 games of .000
21 games of .182 or worse.
42 games of .286 or worse.
52 games of .333 or worse.

What really stands out there is the half the season is .286 or worse and half of that is .104 lower .....

That only leaves 30 games for him to not suck.

.371 is "league average" for the SG spot. That's 52 games of "not even close".

I think you confuse "flawed" and "incomplete." A flawed metric has flawed methodology and does not measure what it is supposed to measure. TS% is a simple metric that measure what it is supposed to measure. It's incomplete because you need to look at other metrics to determine a player's offensive impact.

The example you gave does not show its flaw. It just shows the problem of small sample size. You are using a single shot, which is an extremely small sample.

You are strictly basing your assessment of efficiency on 3 pt % which isn’t a fair or complete assessment of a player. What about 2pt %? And you arbitrarily set the league avg .370 as a benchmark. What was the criteria for this stat? Minimum num of games, FGM or minutes played? If .370 comprises the entire league then this number is deceiving and simply takes the entirety of made and missed 3 pt shots by all SG’s in the league regardless of min played etc then .370 is a lofty feat and good players like Book, J Brown, Monk, or Ant didn’t reach.

Also Have you compared and contrasted the 3pt % variation per game of other players in the league to Green? What does that look like for other players?

Is shooting below this “league average” an indicator of a player’s ability or value? What other attributes does the player possess that affect wins? Certainly for the players I just named, 3pt % isn’t a final determinant of ability or value.

Is Jalen a great 3 pt shooter? No not by any means. But simply assessing a player on this merit isn’t a complete assessment especially when other attributes are neglected.

Lets just cut to the chase.

Is Jalen Green the guy you are paying 5/$280m?

    I'm not.

Let’s not cut to the chase, that discussion is in a perfect place and we’re all enjoying it. No need to skip that part.

Nobody's saying he's efficient, straw men arguments just make you look foolish.

I'm not a Jalen Green fan in the slightest, and even I think that's an absurd way to look at it.

At this point his trade value is in the toilet, little risk in running him back one more season to see if something finally clicks. I suspect it won't, then we dump him.

In the IMO unlikely scenario he turns his flashes into a full season, little reason to think he would regress from that.

This really does trump all the other stats about Jalen. He has to prove he is not this guy quickly or he should be shown the door. That is why I think it is imperative for the Rockets to find a “Jalen insurance” vet somehow. Jalen can break down defenses like no-one on our team, but those shooting percentages just don’t make the grade, even if he is getting to the line.

Devin Booker, SGA, Ant, Damian Lillard, De'Aaron Fox

Hopefully these guys become better 3 point shooters soon or else they may never make an All NBA team and their "fans" will turn on them.
