Messages like, “No cruising. No U-turns. Midnight to 6 am” were posted around the neighborhood in 1997, with the intent to curb gay men from roaming the streets to hook up.

During daytime hours u-turns and "cruising" are perfectly legal, however these were illegal during night hours only. The reason u-turns and cruising were illegal at night had nothing to do with traffic safety, but instead the purpose was to stop gay men from driving around looking for other gay men to hook up with.​

It was designed like a speed trap for cops to pull over gays at night time.

i was trying to figure out what the problem was and i honestly thought the sign was offensive to trans people because the u-turn symbol was like a dude tuckin' it between their legs or something. but your explanation makes much more sense.

 

Knowledgeable just means I did a search on Reddit and it definitely doesn't sound as bad as the headlines.
