I don't understand the hype for Reed Sheppard. He's the new Jimmer Fredette. Just resign Aaron Holiday.
I'm almost 100% sure it's just mindless trolling, I don't think anyone is genuinely as dumb as he's pretending to be when discussing this.
"Why the Rockets select Reed Sheppard: The Spurs are really hoping their guy will fall one more spot and someone will move into this spot for another player (Memphis for Clingan has been mentioned as a possibility). Sheppard’s camp is pushing for Houston to go in another direction, so that he can play in San Antonio. Houston moving down a few spots and targeting another player is a possibility. Sheppard at 3 remains the most likely scenario. if they keep the pick, he would give the Rockets a skilled and mature scoring point to add to their young core." https://www.nbadraft.net/2024-nba-extended-mock-draft-5-0/ So, Reed doesn't wanna come to Houston?
Nowadays, all media is pushing Shappard to be drafted by the Spurs I suppose... https://www.espn.com/nba/insider/st...aft-2024-debating-need-value-30-round-1-picks Both Givony and Woo picks Reed for Spurs at 4.
I think more likely media around the league are hoping Houston screws this up so Sheppard can go to San Antonio because he'd pair so perfectly with Wemby. I think that's what is behind a lot of rumors. They know the Rockets have a dumb GM and so they are trying to speak things into existence by suggesting the Rockets draft a 3rd string center or trade down.
It makes logical sense for Sheppard's career he would want to go to the Spurs. His minutes will most likely be limited going to the Rockets. Higher chance he gets near starter level minutes if he gets drafted to the Spurs as their guard depth is very weak.
https://www.nbadraft.net/2024-nba-extended-mock-draft-5-0/ 3. Houston (from Brooklyn) Reed Sheppard 6-3 Ht, 6-3 Ws, 180 lbs, SG/PG Kentucky Fr. Sheppard has some real question marks, having come off the bench on a loaded team where he was protected with star level talent around him at all times. Regardless, Sheppard is one of the highest rated prospects for the 2024 draft for a number of reasons. First and foremost he has one of the best shooting strokes in the draft and also plays with incredible IQ showing passing and ball handling ability. He’s bound to struggle to play to his draft position, but that’s the reality of the 2024 NBA draft. While the eye test does him no favors, his analytic numbers put him right at the top of this year’s draft. Every year, a player becomes the “analytics darling” of that specific draft. Detractors look at him as a limited, undersized athlete and question how much of his game will translate and whether he will be able to get shots off going against longer athletes at the next level. The name Jimmer Freddete gets mentioned, granted Sheppard does a lot more with steals, rebounds and even blocked shots. Is he Mark Price or is he Seth Curry? Probably somewhere in the middle. I mean I don't see him trying to gamble anything in that macro. Also again like I said this is the opinion of someone who used to work for an NBA team and does scouting for his livelihood. You can disagree with his assessment on tape. I just tend to skew towards his opinion because as a regular fan, I don't fully trust my own ability to translate the little amount of youtube tape I see on the internet.
Also more importantly playing time. He is just going to get far more playing time right out the gate in San Antonio. There is no one set in stone in that Spurs roster as part of a "core" outside of Wemby. So plenty of minutes to go around.
If Sheppard goes to the Spurs we will regret it for a long time. Not only is he the best pick for us it keeps him off a key rival.
Exactly right. The best thing for Sheppard would be to go to San Antonio where he can instantly be paired with a superstar. The best thing for the Rockets would be to pair Sheppard with Sengun after a year coming off the bench behind FVV.
I do not quite understand why they state "While the eye test does him no favors"? Unless they are referencing his height, I see no issues with him other than he sometimes gambles for steals which as @cmoak1982 stated can be addressed with coaching. Other than that they eye test is really good. There is not much to not like about him.
A lot of people who write this **** spend very little time looking into each player because they have to write about so many different players. The result is often very lazy, very shallow analysis where they largely parrot things they read somewhere.
