Considering how Maldy was regarded in the clubhouse and hiring a rookie manager, it wasn't his time to go. Stros could've ran with 3 catchers (Maldy 40 GP) or hired him as a coach. Astros had multi-inning options out of the bullpen with the surplus of starting pitching. They could've easily survived with one less bullpen arm to offset the roster spot having 3 catchers.
