New Predator movie confirmed – but it's not Prey 2

It'll be helmed by the Prey director.

A new Predator movie is currently in the works with Prey filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg attached to direct.

Titled Badlands, the film will be directed by Trachtenberg from a script co-written with Patrick Aison, who also penned Prey.

Trachtenberg, known for sci-fi horror 10 Cloverfield Lane, breathed new life into the alien franchise with the critically acclaimed Prey, nominated for both Best Directing and Best Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie at last month's Emmys ceremony.

Despite the 2022 film's success, Badlands will have no connection to it as it's expected to be a stand-alone st0ry.

Plot details for Trachtenberg's upcoming movie are being kept under wraps, but Deadlinereports the director and the studio executives are keen on picking a lead star soon.

Meanwhile, there's a chance that star Amber Midthunder will reprise her role of Comanche Nation warrior Naru in a previously announced follow-up to Prey. If confirmed, Midthunder's return would make Prey 2 the first film in the saga to feature the same protagonist.

Speaking about the sequel in January 2023, Midthunder said she "would be happy" to be a part of a new Prey adventure, though she had no insights as to when that would happen — and it seems likely that production on Badlandswill now further delay Prey 2.

"I don't have a date for you," the actress told Variety last year.

"This is not an announcement, but I'm not saying it's not. We talk all the time about all kinds of things and that was probably one," she added.

"I'm ready. I loved that experience. I love that movie. I would be happy to, you know, see where else we can take it."

PREDATOR: New Standalone Movie Starring Elle Fanning In The Works From PREY Director Dan Trachtenberg
    [IMG]
While a direct sequel to Prey is still happening, a new standalone Predator movie titled Badlands starring Elle Fanning is also in development...

As 20th Century Studios and director Dan Trachtenberg move forward with their plans to expand the Predator franchise following the success of the most recent instalment, Prey, the next project to feature the iconic extraterrestrial big game hunter has now been announced.

Deadline reports that Trachtenberg is set to helm a standalone Predator movie titled Badlands, with Elle Fanning (The Neon Demon, Super 8) on board to play the lead role. Plot details are still under wraps, but the story is believed to be set "sometime in the future."

Trachtenberg is said to have wanted to land an "established star" for this movie, and began taking meetings with talent. Insiders close to the project say, "Fanning is a fan of the franchise and once execs got wind of her interest, moved to set a meeting with her and Trachtenberg."

As for Prey, a direct sequel to the 2022 film is also happening, though details are still few and far between. Deadline believes that the plan is to return to the movie's original setting, and star Amber Midthunder is expected to reprise her lead role as Naru.

Trachtenberg said the following about a potential sequel during an interview with ComicBook.com last year.

"For everyone who's been asking me about sequels, it's like, that is the thing, is that often times someone does a cool thing and the sequel is just....and then the next part, and then it's like, oh, well then that's just following up the cool. That isn't what that thing was. And so yes, in thinking about what sequels could be, the primary conversation was and always will be, what we can do that is also special, that hasn't happened yet. Not just for the Predator franchise, but for this kind of genre in particular. Can we still be doing something cool?"

Hollywood just pumping out remakes or the 10th installment of an old franchise, and then acts confused when it doesn’t do well at the box office

What you're saying doesn't really make sense most of the time. Hollywood is in it for profit, and they're good at it. Of course they're going to milk a popular IP.

    https://www.the-numbers.com/movies/franchise/Predator#tab=summary

The Predator franchise has cost $291m (not counting Prey since it was aired on TV but still considered a financial success) and made 741m worldwide.

Compare that to 'new' IPs that can flounder for a variety of reasons, it's a no-brainer to keep making Fast and Furious movies, even with a steady % drop in profit every movie, it's still printing money.

the 2018 Predator movie didn’t even break even…the one released during Covid gets a pass I guess since it wasn’t even released in theaters

Mad Max had historically made way more than its budget too, but is currently bombing

    Weaksauce examples.

Yeah, franchises start to sputter and they get retooled.

It’s a lot more risky to make new tentpole blockbuster IPs. You need name recognition even then to get them going like Jim Cameron.

weaksauce examples when one just came out and was part of a franchise that used to make more than its budget…and the other is a previous movie of this very same franchise that u used as an example of financial success when it didn’t manage to break even in 2018…ok

I'm surprised it didn't clean up at the Oscars that year. Best screenplay, best picture, acting... the works.

    News: Two Predator movies!

    https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/m...tor-movie-an-alien-sequel-speed-3-1236042464/

Here’s a big one. Will the next Predatormovie get a theatrical release? [Editors note: this conversation took place before Disney dated Predator: Badlands for a 2025 release in theaters.]

    Yes. And no.

    You’re killing me here.

Yes, a Predator movie will have a theatrical. I’ll tell you very simply. After Prey became a success, Dan [Trachtenberg] came back and said he didn’t want to do Prey 2. And we’re like, “What do you want to do?” And he rattled off a bunch of ideas that were really crazy but really cool. We’ve actually done two of them. Two are coming out next year. One I can’t talk about yet, but the other one is the live-action Predator film with Elle Fanning that just wrapped in New Zealand. That’ll be out theatrically sometime next year.

You’re blowing my mind. Let’s tackle this one at time. One Predator movie is coming out theatrically?

It’s titled Badlands and it is an absolutely bonkers idea. It is a sci-fi thing, but it’s not what everybody thinks it is. And I mean, it’s awesome. It is so nuts. But in Dan, we trust.

Now you said there’s a second Predator movie.

There’s a second Predator movie that we have different plans for. Dan has actually directed both.

So there’s a secret Predator movie

There’s a secret Predator movie that will come out before the theatrical one but I can’t say anything about yet.

Fine. Will we eventually see another Alien vs. Predator?

    Probably.

Not sure how I feel about that.

It wouldn’t be in the way you think. That’s the thing. Not in the way that it will just be called Alien vs. Predator or anything like the original movies. If we do this, they’ll be organically created out of these two franchises that we’ve continued with characters that we fall in love with and those characters will combine…perhaps. But we haven’t gotten to that point. And we’re not just going to bang it out.

(The entire article is a good read about the studio’s plans for Alien, Predator, Apes, Avatar, etc)
