No reason to start his clock to sit him on the bench, and until they figure out what’s going on with McCormick there’s no everyday spot for him. Leon’s breakout is great, but he’s not been so dominant that he warrants making a rash trade or benching a good player. He will continue in AAA until the trade deadline, at which point I expect a trade to give him an opportunity (either in Houston or elsewhere).
If Chas had even the slightest bit of trade value, I’m sure they’d package him up… but at this juncture, its selling at an all time low and no other contending team is seeking out somebody of his profile.
I could see a low leverage deal . . . kinda Miles Straw ish - for a player or two that could be developed. I'd like to free up some outfield time to see what we have with some of the young guns.
The DSL Blue team beat the Rays 9-3 on DSL opening day thanks to a six-run 7th inning. Juan Sierra and Jhon Diaz had two hits apiece. Sierra, a Dominican OF in his second year in the DSL, was cited as a lower-bonus sleeper by Baseball America last year. Diaz is an infielder who signed out of Cuba in December 2022. Edwin Gonzalez, a 3rd-year pitcher, walked one and struck out five over three scoreless no-hit innings to get the win. The Orange team and FCL team were both rained out.
With the DSL rosters updated there were quite a few new names I hadn’t seen. Only notable thing to me was that a lot of them were from Venezuela, so not sure if that’s a new trend or not.
If the Astros continue this losing trend, Astros really need to trade Alex Bergman, Framber Valdez, Kyle Tucker, Jake Myers It is sad, but the Prospects can be great part of the Rebuild.
There are currently 169 players assigned to the Astros stateside minor league rosters, with 10 on the 60 day or full season IL, so they should have room for all their draftees in July without having to release anyone to stay under the 180 man limit.
They dont need to rebuild. They need to start playing guys that have been producing and add a high leverage bullpen piece.
McCormick has put up 7.4 fwar over 1286 MLB pa, with a 115 wRC+ over that time. He’s an established above average everyday big league outfielder. He’s making $2.85M this year and has another 2 years of control remaining. He’s been bad this season, and whether that’s a temporary slump, or injury related, or some kind of permanent drop off remains to be seen. But he’s got value.
Oliver Carrillo is moving from the eastern part of North Carolina to the far western part of the state, as he's been promoted to Asheville.
They need to release some detritus, for the simple reason of creating roster spots and playing time for promotions. You can't keep 'em all, gotta have a culling every year
He has a career .703 OPS vs RHP, he's basically been a league average bat against them not unplayable. This season he has sucked against everybody. Chaz would have more value somewhere he can play CF instead of the kiddie table that is LF. We'll see how the next few weeks go, not much risk in holding on a little longer instead of selling low. That time isn't gonna have a meaningful negative impact on Leon or Loperfido. If the season keeps going south we have plenty of time to get a good look at them
Oh I'm not advocating cutting the guy or anything, I really hope he can get it together, when he's on he's fun as hell to watch. I hate to think it out loud, but his last year strikes me as a possible career outlier. Related thought: does he have an option year left? A couple of weeks in AAA instead of playing every ~3rd game in HOU might let him focus on some things...I dunno.
Yes he can still be optioned. Abreu, Altuve, Bregman, Caratini, Dubon, and Singleton are the only position players without options available.
